Troops Rescue 10 Abducted NECO Candidates, Teachers After ISWAP Attack on Borno School

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers abducted by suspected ISWAP terrorists during an attack on Lassa Community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the terrorists attacked the Technical Secondary School in Lassa at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday while students were writing their NECO examination, abducting several candidates and teachers before fleeing into the surrounding bush.

An emerging cybercrime syndicate known as "Yan Vocal" operating in Argungu Local Government Area

According to intelligence reports, the group, comprising mainly youths between the ages of 19 and 24, is allegedly involved in hacking social media accounts, creating fake online identities, and using blackmail, threats and other fraudulent tactics to extort money from victims.

The latest video purportedly released by ISIS following the attack on the Nigerien military base at Inates should concern every security planner across the Sahel.

Beyond its propaganda value, the footage appears to showcase a substantial cache of military-grade weapons reportedly seized during the raid an indication that terrorist groups continue to replenish their arsenals

The cache of heavy weapons, including artillery rockets, machine guns and anti-aircraft guns, represents a significant boost to the firepower of jihadist groups. Every military weapon lost in battle strengthens terrorists and weakens regional security.

For Nigeria, the threat is particularly concerning. The porous borders between Niger and northern Nigeria have long enabled the movement of fighters, weapons and logistics. While there is no evidence that the specific weapons shown have entered Nigeria, experience has shown that terrorist groups operating across the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin often share resources, tactics and support networks. What is captured in Niger today could eventually influence the security landscape in the wider region.

Across the Sahel, terrorist groups have demonstrated remarkable operational cooperation. Fighters now move across the porous borders linking Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Burkina Faso, while extremist networks in the Lake Chad Basin maintain ideological and operational links despite geographical separation.

Counter-terrorism operations must therefore go beyond offensive raids. Greater investment is needed in intelligence, surveillance, rapid-reaction forces, fortified forward operating bases and stronger regional coordination to deny extremist groups the opportunity to seize military equipment.

The Inates incident, should serve as a wake-up call for the Alliance of Sahel States and neighboring countries like Nigeria, protecting military installations is now as important as conducting offensive operations. Every successful attack that allows terrorists to seize weapons extends the conflict and increases the threat across the Sahel.

In today’s conflict, every weapon captured today has the potential to become tomorrow’s threat. A security breach in Niger today can become a security challenge for Nigeria tomorrow.
