THIS GENERATION OF IMMIGRANTS ARE FORTUNATE

I sat down yesterday evening to reflect on my life in the UK for the past 33 years. I cannot believe how the years went but, to God be the glory.

A lot of immigrants are coming to the UK legally as students, healthcare workers, professionals, investors, spouses, dependants of people with settled status or people with limited leave to remain.

By the time they get here, they get the right to work, study, drive or get a national insurance number. It took some people 15 years or more to be able to get an NI, study, work, drive or buy a house. For some, they had to wait for 20 years. It made them look lazy but it was not their fault.

In this day and age, once you have a British child, they will usually give you the right to stay. In my days, it was not so. My wife and children were born here. They are British by birth but the immigration authority made me report to the police station for 8 years, placed a deportation order on me, tried to deport me and locked me in detention for five weeks for being an overstayer. . Today, an overstayer with a British child is allowed to stay. Imagine!

Today, many immigrants do professional jobs. They came in with their qualifications or they got qualifications here and they can get good jobs with fantastic pay. In my days, we mostly did menial jobs. For example, I was a cleaner and a Macdonalds burger fryer.

So, if you are in the category of those that are doing well, do not take it for granted. Things do change. If you are not doing well, do not give up. Things do change.

As hard as it was, I experienced a turnaround because I did not give up. Do not give up. If you are focussed, persistent and resilient, you will achieve your goals. If you lose focus, the end will be bitter. All the best!
