No.
Mitchell omitted an entire chapter from The Iliad (Chapter 10) only because Martin West thinks it's a later interpolation, and omits hundreds of other lines in both The Iliad and Odyssey only because he wanted to make the stories "flow".
His translations are even more reckless than Emily Wilson's.
The most faithful, but readable, Iliad translations are those of Anthony Verity and Caroline Alexander. The most faithful, but readable, translations of the Odyssey are by Verity and Albert Cook.
Charles: The Wilson translation is legitimately one of the worst translations of any major work in history. She omits crucial passages, distorts motive and character through sensationally bad mistranslation, misattributes quotes, and even confuses characters.
Just got starters, see https://t.co/F2AyuoXTN9
Let's start here:
Although almost no one in academia wanted to say it (I presume for political reasons), the Emily Wilson translations of Homer are among the worst ever produced. They're tone-deaf, cutesy/unserious, and often inaccurate.
Just one quick example:
Homer introduces Odysseus with the adjective ฮ ฮฟฮปฯฯฯฮฟฯฮฟฯ (polytropos). This is key to understanding him as a character. It literally means "many turns (or twists)", and refers not only to Odysseus' journey, but to his wily nature: he always comes up with a plan.
Wilson translates polytropos as "complicated".
But that's not what it means, and "complicated" throws off the whole understanding of who Odysseus is. It is an absurd error in a translation full of absurd errors.
Wondering when you're finally - finally - going to put it together, Tom.
The idea that Trump is an oblivious innocent, and that his advisors are to blame, is clearly absurd.
The guy's had half a decade in the Oval Office. He hired these people. He is in on all this stuff.
When do you just acknowledge the truth?
1. The question wasn't "How does it work?". It was, "In your view, did Iran pose an immediate threat?"
2. Everyone already knows Gabbard's view, and that she refused to be honest about it.
3. The window for Gabbard to cement her legacy as a woman of principle by resigning is closing.
@RenzTom Question for you:
At what point, if any, do you finally accept Trump isn't who you think, and is knowingly choosing to do all the things you blame Bondi and Wiles for?
@LauraLoomer Laura:
This is a huge self-own. It's generating sympathy for Carlson and antipathy toward you. Makes you look nasty, hyper-desperate, & extraordinarily presumptuous.
If you want to neutralize Carlson's effect these days, focus exclusively on exposing errors in his views.
@RealJamesWoods Don't forget that although he would not publicly endorse Thune, behind the scenes, Trump did everything he could to push Thune into his position.
Maybe it's time to ask why.
