School tuition in the UAE carries 0% VAT, along with textbooks and class trips.

Uniforms, devices and the canteen are at 5%. The school bus is exempt.

- kindergarten and Grade 1 classrooms must be on the ground floor
- at least 30% of the outdoor play area must be shaded

Thinking about the IB Career-related Programme instead of the full Diploma?

The Ministry of Education counts it as a vocational Grade 12 certificate.

To get that, your child needs:

- a BTEC Level 3 Diploma, 90 credits or more, graded PP or better
- two IB subjects at grade 3 or above

The general equivalency through this route was only for 2023 and 2024 graduates.

Ask the university your child wants which one it accepts.

A lot of people think an online degree won't be recognised in the UAE.

It will, mostly.

Here's what the Ministry actually checks.

Getting a foreign degree recognised by the Ministry takes four things:

- an online application, through one of the Ministry's verification partners
- AED 350 to the partner, then AED 50 to the Ministry once the degree is verified
- 18 working days
- your graduation certificate and a copy of your passport

The other emirates have their own rules:

- Abu Dhabi: up to 5% of fees, and the school can take it up to four months before the year starts.

If your child doesn't come back, the school can keep it.

- Sharjah: 5%, capped at AED 1,000, taken within four months of the start.

Same thing, no refund if your child doesn't turn up.

- Ras Al Khaimah: 5% or AED 500, whichever is higher.

Written notice two weeks before the new year and you get it back.

Being asked for next year's re-registration deposit already?

KHDA's rules for September-start schools:

- the school can't collect it before the end of the spring break
- the deadline can't be earlier than 1 May
- it's capped at 5% of tuition or AED 500, whichever is higher, and comes off next year's fees

If you ever change your mind, give the school 60 calendar days' notice in writing before the new year starts and you get the deposit back.

For anyone wondering what the programme is: 100 scholarships a year at top-200 universities, with tuition, living costs and travel covered.

It's for Emirati students from Dubai families, wherever in the UAE they went to school.

And the programme has already covered 152 students in the first two cohorts.

It covers students at KHDA-regulated universities in Dubai: tailored fares, extra baggage and more flexibility on flights home and back.

The target behind it: international students at 50% of Dubai's university enrolment by 2033.

They were 35% in 2024-25 (of 42,026 students across 41 institutions).

The rule comes from the Ministry, not the school.

Bringing a phone to school sits on the same level as smoking on campus.

Schools can confiscate phones for a month the first time and until the end of the school year for a repeat.

You sign a form when they take it and another when you get it back.

This is the body that allocates educational land in Dubai.

Its 2026-28 plan:

- over 30 sites for more than 35,000 new student seats by 2028
- stated focus on lower-fee schools

It’s also behind Dubai Schools, which is set to add 1,000-plus seats a year, taking capacity past 7,000.

The new marks replace the assessed ones and the result is final, so a student who did well under the March scheme can come out lower.

It only covers the papers CBSE cancelled in March. The 27 subjects sat by 28 February stand as they are.

Forms go in between 22 and 26 September, no fee, no extension.

Is your school's Outstanding rating still current?

KHDA hasn't issued new school ratings for two years. The rating you see on any Dubai school today is from the 2023-24 round, or earlier.

Visits restart this term, with at most 24 hours' notice. There are two kinds:

- a full inspection, which ends in a new rating
- a shorter monitoring visit, which ends in a report but no new rating

@gulf_news Dubai Municipality school food rules, published in 2017:

- no fizzy drinks
- no energy drinks
- no chocolate bars or sweets

Menus get approved through the municipality’s DM Checked platform.

Five municipality inspectors cover 456 schools and nurseries.

The Ministry checked 253,000 certificates this year and calls forgery "isolated and very limited".

A genuine degree can fail the same check if the university isn't licensed. The CAA register has 103 licensed institutions right now, Dubai free zone campuses included too.

And an online degree from abroad is fine. The Ministry doesn't look at mode of study, except medicine and engineering, which have to be full-time.
