At a time when massacres against Turks were erupting across vast territories — from the Balkans to the Aegean, from the Caucasus to Anatolia — many minority communities continued to live peacefully among the Turkish people.

The history of anti-Turkish violence is not confined to the Aegean islands alone.
It includes the Peloponnese and the massacre of Tripolitsa, Navarino, Chios (1822), Samothrace (1821),
Constantinople (the Greek uprising and killings in 1821),
Kos, Rhodes, Psara, Crete, Cyprus, and extends through Macedonia, the Balkans, and even parts of Anatolia.

While entire Turkish communities were wiped out in these regions, in Anatolia — the heartland of the Turks — Christian, Jewish, and other minority communities often found relative safety, tolerance, and coexistence.
History is complex. But when voices from a century ago remember being treated "like family" by Turks, it challenges many of today’s simplistic narratives.
