On this day in 2014, Germany won the men’s World Cup for the fourth time.

The final against Argentina will not be remembered as fondly as the 7-1 win against Brazil in the semi-final - but it was fitting that they needed to get past South America’s two giants to become the first European side to lift the trophy in the Americas.

Argentina started the stronger of the two sides, and missed a handful of good chances - Gonzalo Higuain scuffed wide from close range, and - to great surprise - Lionel Messi dragged a low shot a yard wide of Manuel Neuer’s left-hand post.

At that point, as goalless finals often do, the game rather fizzled out before Joachim Low’s changes proved to be match-winning.

Andre Schurrle crossed to fellow substitute Mario Gotze, who produced a superb finish - controlling the ball with his chest and then smashing in, all in one movement - to secure a 1-0 win, and Germany’s first triumph since reunification.
