Parhaat tulokset maissa joissa opetus on opettajajohtoista ja tavoitteellista.

Seuraavaksi tyypilliseen tapaan TV:ssä asiaa selittävät opetustyöstä pitkään poissaolleet asiantuntijat, jotka muistuttavat kuinka opettajat ovat karttaneet viimeisimpien tutkimustulosten mukaisia menetelmiä ja olleet muutosvastarintaisia.

Me opettajat olemme vuosia huutaneet tuuleen. Kerroimme kuinka inkluusio ei toimi, kuinka tietotekniikan liiallinen käyttö ja kännykät haittaavat opetusta, kuinka vaatimustasoa on jatkuvasti laskettu pedagogiikan ulkopuolisten toimijoiden vallattua vaikuttamisen ilmatilan. Nyt tulokset ovat kaikkien näkyvillä, mutta suurena pelkona on kokeneiden osaavien opettajien asiantuntijalausuntoiden täydellinen ohittaminen taas kerran.

Olemme myös ajautuneet niin kauas perusosaamisen oppimaan oppimisen - sinnikkyys - ytimestä, että sen tilanteen muuttaminen vaatii aikaa ja kokonaisvaltaisen asennemuutoksen. Kun jokainen oppilas oikeasti edelleen tietää, että pääset aina etenemään on osaamisen taso sitten mikä tahansa. Inkluusio ja kolmiportainen tuki ei ole tuottanut tulosta ja uusi tuen malli ei vielä ollut mittauksessa mukana. Armovitosten ongelma näkyy nyt tuloksissa. Osaamistakuu yksin ei muuta asiaa. Osaamisen näyttämiseen ja koko oppimiseen ei ole tarvetta, jos oppilas tietää kuitenkin pääsevänsä etenemään. Luokallejättämistä ja oppilaan tukea on katsottava kokonaisuutena, jossa molemmat osat ovat käytössä.

Kännykälain mukanaan tuoma muutos näkyy seuraavassa tuskimuksessa ja kännyköiden videoiden ja muiden kiinnostavuuksien mukanaan tuoma lyhytjänteisyys voi aikaa myöden vähetä, mutta vain jos samalla vaaditaan lisää keskittymistä vaativia tehtäviä ja opetetaan oppilaista keskittymään. Olisiko siis aika palauttaa pelkästään keskittymisen opettamisen näkökulmasta tyyppikirjaimien sitominen eli kaunokirjoitus opetukseen. Keskittymistä ja sinnikkyyttä voidaan opettaa ja oppia. Sen resurssi ei edes ole kallista riittää, kun vaatimustasoa hyväksytystä suorituksesta nostetaan, oppilaan tekemättäjättämisellä ja huonolla käytöksellä on seurauksensa.

Ja täsmälleen samat asiat koskevat kaikkia poliitikkoja. Jos edelleen ohitatte opettajien kuuntelemisen saatte jatkossakin juuri tätä samaa mitä tilasitte eli heikentyviä oppimistuloksia.

Kulttuurilla on valtava vaikutus lukemiseen. Lontoon reissulta kotiutui perinteisesti kassillinen kirjoja, ja samalla sai hengittää kirjakauppojen kukoistusta. Kaupat oli tuppusen täynnä uteliaita ihmisiä ja ovesta lähdettiin kassan kautta. Silmiinpistävää oli, miten mittava määrä ulkona istui ihmisiä kirja kädessään - ja miten vähän kahviloissa tuijotettiin ruutua.

Tänään osui silmiini yhdyssana ”syöpätaistelu”. Vihaan tuota sanaa. Minulla oli syöpä. Selvisin siitä, mutta ei se mikään taistelu ollut. Odotin vain, että kuolenko vai enkö. Kukaan ei taistellut. Lääketiede oli tutkinut ja onnistui hoitamaan homman.

En minä taistellut yhtään. Kirjoitin vain ohjeita rintamamiestalon ilmanvaihdosta, wifi-verkon ongelmista, en halua hautakiveä ja muista asioista.

Sitten vaan odotin, ja juttelin kissan kanssa.

No rain fell in Rasuwa in Nepal this morning. The river still rose and swept away everything in its path. Here is why.

At 8.37 this morning, near the Nepal and China border, instruments picked up strong shaking. Early reports called it an earthquake of magnitude 4.4. The United States Geological Survey has now corrected that. There was no earthquake.

A huge block of ice and rock broke off a mountain and crashed into the valley. The impact was so heavy that it registered like an earthquake of magnitude 5.2. The landslide made the shaking. The shaking did not make the landslide.

That ice and rock fell straight into the Lhende Khola, a small stream that feeds the Bhote Koshi river. It blocked the stream fully and made a wall of ice, rock and mud across it.

The water behind that wall kept rising. Then the wall broke.

What came down was not water. It was mud, boulders and ice moving together. Video from the Rasuwagadhi border post shows the whole crossing vanish in under a minute. Timure and Syafrubesi were hit next. The surge then reached Bidur in Nuwakot and went on to Devghat, more than 100 kilometres downstream.

Police in Bagmati province have confirmed at least 95 dead in Nepal. China has confirmed 3 dead in Tibet with 265 missing there. The Nepal Tourism Board says nearly 400 travellers are missing, including 105 Indians and 37 people of Indian origin, many of them returning from the Kailash Mansarovar route. About 430 megawatts of power generation has been damaged. Bihar has put its districts along the Gandak on alert.

Now the part that matters for anyone living below a Himalayan river.

The same stream did the same thing 14 months ago. On the 8th of July 2025 the Bhote Koshi flooded with no rain. Nepal found that a glacial lake in Tibet had drained in a few hours. Scientists had already marked this basin as one of the most dangerous in the Himalaya for such floods.

These floods give no warning. No rain, no cloud, no alert, because the weather is not what causes them. Ice that stayed frozen for thousands of years is now loose enough to fall.

So remember this. If you are near a mountain river and the water suddenly drops for no reason, or you hear a low roar from upstream, do not stand and film it. That is a blockage forming or breaking. Move up the slope, away from the river, at once. Do not run along the bank. The water is faster than you.

Clear weather is no longer proof that a Himalayan river is safe.

Good question. Your immune memory is physical. It's stored in memory B & T cells and in the antibodies circulating in your blood, built up from every infection and vaccine in your life. Measles virus enters cells through a receptor called CD150, which is found on immune cells, including those memory lymphocytes. So infection kills off part of the archive. Studies measuring children before and after measles found it depleted a substantial fraction of their circulating antibodies against other viruses and bacteria, reducing both the diversity and the amount. Immunologists call it immune amnesia. You come out of measles immune to measles, and partially stripped of protection you'd already earned against other things. It rebuilds over the following years through re-exposure and revaccination, which is thought to explain why mortality from other childhood infections stays elevated for 2-3 after measles.

I was pregnant and got COVID during my first trimester in April, 2020, while working at Rikers. I’d had 2 miscarriages and a failed round of IVF before, and as I lay in bed, I mostly worried that I’d lose this pregnancy, too.

I didn’t - 4th time’s a charm. But by the end of that year, it was clear that infection during pregnancy in a woman with no immunity really did raise the risk of serious COVID and pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia.

Vaccination during pregnancy, conversely, has been shown not to cause serious harms in pregnant women or to contribute to their miscarriage risk. The Fauci emails under discussion today show a thoughtful exchange between scientists navigating uncertainty at a time when they had to offer guidance to the public. This was one of the areas where the recommendations they arrived at turned out to be extremely sound: the risk of infection really did (does) outweigh the risk of vaccination.

Everyone who is taking messages out of context to inspire rage and regret in women who lost pregnancies during the pandemic is doing those women a great disservice. There’s enough second guessing that goes on in those situations; and Fauci is neither directly nor indirectly responsible for anyone’s pregnancy loss.
