You can choose to patronise a microbiologist whenever you need Medical Laboratory Services, it is your personal choice so keep it to yourself and don't misinform the general public.

But let me make this very clear...

A Microbiologist is not a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

A Science Laboratory Technologist (SLT), is not a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

A Biochemist is not a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

A Medical Laboratory Scientist is a professional who went through a five years degree program in a university's College of Medical Sciences or college of health science faculty or the Medical Laboratory Science faculty, was taught MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE courses because they are being prepared to work in a MEDICAL LABORATORY not Science Laboratory.

Medical Laboratory Science degree program is both theory and practical based, hence the need for Medical Laboratory Science students to undergo compulsory Clinical laboratory postings (Lab Postings specifically in teaching hospitals laboratories because they are being prepared to work in MEDICAL LABORATORIES) alongside the theoretical aspect.

Aside their numerous courses and semester exams they have to write, they have to also prepare for an external exam called Professional exam.
This professional exam is a standard exam for all Medical Laboratory Science students irrespective of the university you are attending, and this exam is conducted and supervised by Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) @MedLabNigeria, this Council is responsible for the training of Medical Laboratory Professionals, and also accreditation of all Medical Laboratories in Nigeria amongst other functions.

Medical Laboratory Science Students, sits for this professional exam twice (First and Final Professional exam) before their final graduation.

After graduation the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) inducts these Professionals into the Medical Laboratory Science Profession with the license to practice as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Because These professionals called Medical Laboratory Scientists are saddled with the responsibilities of saving lives through quality laboratory results, they are also mandated to go through a one year internship in a hospital laboratory where they are also drilled for a whole year to become refined and better professionals.

And then, there is also the NYSC which is general, but the difference is that These Medical Laboratory Professionals are posted to hospital laboratory were they both work and also learn from their senior colleagues.

After then, they are now fully qualified to man any Licensed Medical Laboratory, and this is because they have gone through the vigorous training to becoming a Medical Laboratory Scientist, hence you can trust them with your samples for quality results.

Apart from Medical Laboratory, there are other types of laboratories, hence there are other professions that have 'Laboratory' in their name, but what distinguishes Medical Laboratory Science From others is the 'Medical' which defines our area of focus.

Every profession is important, but let every professional stick to their job description and professional boundaries.

And very importantly, make every professional, dey answer him professional name correctly.
