Yesterday, Faytene sat down with MP Tamara Jansen for a sobering update on the government’s planned expansion of medical assistance in dying—currently set to take effect in March 2027.

Bill C-218, introduced by Tamara, would stop MAID from being expanded to people whose sole underlying condition is mental illness.

A recent all-party parliamentary committee unanimously recommended that this expansion should not proceed. Yet without legislative action, vulnerable Canadians—including those battling depression, addiction or profound isolation—could soon become eligible for assisted death.

Bill C-218 is expected to be debated again at second reading on September 23, with a vote anticipated on October 7. If it passes, it will proceed to committee. If it is defeated, the bill will die—and there is no guarantee another bill will be introduced that offers the same protection.

This should not be about partisan politics. It should be about protecting vulnerable Canadians and ensuring they are offered compassionate care, meaningful support, and hope.
