We’re really really struggling to find Jake a home, we knew it wouldn’t be easy, but it’s not impossible.

If everyone who sees his post can share, the power of sharing really does make a difference.

Let’s help Jake have a better life.

Jake is a 6 year old Bearded collie x Boarder Collie.
Jake is a product of his environment. He lived in home with two elderly owners, and has grown up with both of them going through the various stages of dementia. Other than walk and feed Jake, both owners had no idea of how to train or look after a dog. As a result he has had a stressful life to date, and at times has suffered physical abuse as a method of control. This shows in his behaviour, (nervous, defensive and will attack if feels threatened).
Training has been at a basic level, house trained and walking on the lead.
Jake gets nervous of noise, phones ,hoovers etc. This will lead to excessive barking and with hoovers he will attack them. In the late evening he will start barking for no good reason. Probably this is related to his owners health condition as dementia sufferers symptoms get worse later in the day.
That sums up Jake’s bad points.
Outside Jake is a different dog. He no longer pulls on the lead when walking, takes a command to wait and is more comfortable with passing vehicles.
Small fast cars are still a slight issue. He is no problem when he meets people outside and will lie down should a conversation take place. Most times he is fine meeting other dogs. The exception is if another dog gets aggressive. He will respond. He does not like cats! It should be noted that Jake is also ok with people coming into the house.
He loves to run and fetch a ball. He will happily play outside all day if someone is throwing a ball. Currently this is done on a long rope lead as his play area is not fully enclosed.
Jake requires a quiet home with owners who understand the breed, and can continue to improve his issues. He is not ready ( and may never be) for a house with young children. He needs his space to regain the trust that a raised voice or hand is not a threat.
Over the past 6 weeks there has been an improvement in his behaviour. That said there is still a way to go before he becomes the dog he can and should be.
Jake has a diet of dry food mixed with a small sachet of wet food. In addition to this he does get treats, which he enjoys, as a reward.
From the limited experience with Jake he has been ok in the car.
Jake has and has always had a large cage that he goes into if left alone. He also sleeps in it at night. He is fit and healthy.

I was flying home with a massive migraine and just wanted to sit in the window seat I purchased, put in ear plugs/sleep mask, close the window shade, and curl up. But there’s a little girl in my seat next to her mom. Mom dismissively said “take the aisle.” WRONG! I made them move and mom put her in the middle, which triggered a tantrum. Mom told me that if I wanted it to stop, give her my seat. Instead, I looked at the kid and very loudly said “ENOUGH!” Mom was pissed, but kid shut up 🤷‍♀️

I’ve finally reached the age where my patience for "zero-consequence" parenting has officially hit a wall. My brother in-law has two teenage sons, 14 and 15, who have been raised to treat the world like their personal playground.

Last weekend, we had them over for a BBQ. These kids were messing around with a heavy medicine ball near my outdoor kitchen, something I’ve told them a dozen times not to do. Sure enough, one of them loses his grip and sends it straight into the custom stone countertop of my built in grill.

It didn't just scratch it; it cracked a massive slab of granite right down the center.

My sister in-law (their mother) comes out, sees the damage, and gives me the usual "accidents happen" shrug. She asks what the damage is going to be.

Now, I happen to have a specific umbrella policy on my homeowners' insurance that covers accidental property damage with a flat $250 deductible. But getting a stone mason out here, matching the grain, and overseing the repair is going to be a massive headache for me.

I called the original installer and got the full out of-pocket quote for a total replacement: $2,800.

I handed her the estimate. She turned white, complained about how "expensive stone is these days," but eventually wrote me a check for the full amount.

I paid my $250 deductible, got the counter replaced, and tucked the remaining $2,550 into my "Inconvenience Fund."

My wife thinks I was being "harsh" by not mentioning the insurance. I told her that if you refuse to teach your teenage sons that their actions have real-world costs, then I’m happy to provide the invoice.

If they want to raise terrors, they can pay the "Lack of Discipline" tax. Consider the extra cash my fee for the time I’ll spend managing the contractors.

Uncomfortable thing tonight. Walking back to my truck with my youngest, I was really struggling with a heavy cart uphill. My son kept asking if he could help (he is only 11, and trying so hard to be big and strong like his daddy).

I turned to talk to him and realized at that moment there was a man only inches away from us. My own husband doesn't even walk that close up behind me. As soon as I looked at him, he peeled off and vanished.

It freaked both of us out. There was a family loading up a big SUV, and I guess the father noticed the encounter, because when the guy abruptly turned, the father stopped loading and stood straight up, staring.

My son immediately commented how close that random guy was (literal inches - less than 6" away).

I noticed the family, who were parked next to us, stayed and waited for us to load up and leave before they followed behind us (even though they were done long before us).

I'm grateful for other watchful families. Definitely a reminder to always keep your head on a swivel. ☹️

We achieved amazing new levels of community last night. I got a knock at the door at 9:30 last night. I check the cameras and it's the old Hispanic lady that moved in a few houses down a couple months ago. My kids have started playing with her grandkids recently. She tells me that she works for a catering company and 100 guests didn't show up to a wedding she was working and she has a ton of food she doesn't know what to do with. We got 2 containers filled with seasoned shredded chicken thighs, a big container filled with beef fajita filling, and a whole bag filled with homemade tortillas. Before she leaves she tells me that if I like it she will bring us more. Bros, we achieved peak life achievement... we have the abuela hook up!
