Noreen Khan Niazi, sister of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, has described last May’s military confrontation between Pakistan and India as a “staged drama”, alleging that it formed part of a wider effort to persuade Pakistan to recognise Israel. She claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could have “fixed” Pakistan within minutes had he genuinely intended to launch a full-scale confrontation.
“Modi could have fixed them in two minutes if he had wanted to. Why did Modi stop? What was he afraid of? India is such a large country. Look at that country and then look at yourselves,” she said.
Noreen Niazi alleged that Israel was “behind” the developments and claimed that Pakistan was being prepared to join countries that had established diplomatic relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords.
@javeednusrat You don’t need to do either of the two extremes. Keep on doing what you are doing. Using the existing space, no matter how small, to inform and educate. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
A war with no winners
The United States on Monday carried out strikes on Iranian targets for the third consecutive night, underscoring the deepening crisis in the Persian Gulf.
Washington is also reimposing a naval blockade of Iranian ports from today.
Iran, meanwhile, has struck more vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and launched attacks in neighbouring Gulf countries.
Who is at fault?
The original sin was committed when the United States took the Israeli bait after it joined Israel in bombing Iran on February 28. Trump was persuaded by Netanyahu that a joint military campaign and relentless bombing would trigger regime change in Tehran.
Instead, Iran hit back not only against Israel but also by attacking several Gulf countries. At the same time, it disrupted the key waterway that carries nearly one-fifth of the world's oil supplies.
Nearly five months later, the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as the central stumbling block. Ironically, before February 28, ships were moving freely through the Strait.
This is the net result of Trump's strategy: what was once a non-issue has now become the defining issue. Iran's nuclear programme and its network of proxy groups have taken a back seat.
Iran clearly withstood the combined US-Israeli military campaign, although it lost a number of senior leaders, including Ali Khamenei.
With hostilities resuming and the situation almost back to where it stood before the Islamabad MoU, Trump has limited options. And even those options may not be ideal.
The very fact that the United States agreed to sign the MoU was an acknowledgement that military options had reached their limits.
The agreement itself was heavily tilted in Iran's favour. For the first time, Washington agreed to lift sanctions on Iranian oil and gas exports for a 60-day period, although that waiver has now been withdrawn. Other provisions also accommodated Tehran's concerns more than Washington's.
That was largely because Pakistan managed to convince the Trump administration that diplomacy stood a better chance of delivering results than an open-ended military campaign.
Washington agreed and signed the MoU.
But has Iran squandered that opportunity? Is Tehran now responsible for the latest escalation?
Many found it intriguing, even baffling, that Iran chose to target vessels, including Qatari-linked shipping, in the middle of Ali Khamenei's funeral. Pakistan and other regional players were clearly unhappy. They believed Iran could have handled the situation differently.
As one diplomat put it: "What would have happened if a few ships had been allowed to take the southern route? The Strait of Hormuz is not going anywhere. It made little sense for Iran to escalate at this point."
The diplomat believes the episode may suggest that all is not well within the Iranian leadership.
The latest escalation has not only jeopardised peace efforts but has also deepened mistrust among regional players towards Tehran.
The United States may not have a quick solution to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. But the perception that Iran made the wrong move this time could galvanise regional countries into revisiting their approach.
Despite coming under attack, Gulf countries particularly Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman have largely pursued a pragmatic course. Even the United Arab Emirates has now sought to repair ties with Tehran.
With the Yemen front heating up and the possibility of renewed tensions involving Saudi Arabia, the regional picture is only becoming more complicated.
There are, however, signs that Iran may still be looking for a diplomatic off-ramp. An Iranian military spokesperson said that respect for Iran's rights and adherence to the Islamabad MoU remain the only conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
That suggests diplomacy may not yet be dead but with trust eroding on all sides, the window for a negotiated settlement is narrowing rapidly.

#WATCH | Delhi: On letter of over 100 prominent citizens from India & Pakistan to both PMs for 'restoring peace, normalcy, dialogue', a social activist and one of the signatories says, "I, with a group of 117 people, comprising 61 Indians and 56 Pakistanis, have jointly written a letter. It is an open letter addressed to the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan. The core request is for them to engage in dialogue, normalise relations, and resume trade and communication... Currently, there is a trust deficit between us. That is why it is essential that the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Prime Minister of India talk to each other and hold discussions regarding the state of our relationship. Whatever differences exist should be resolved through dialogue. That is the purpose. The time has come to realise that war is not the solution; war benefits no one..."
#WATCH | Delhi: On letter of over 100 prominent citizens from India & Pakistan to both PMs for 'restoring peace, normalcy, dialogue', one of the signatories - former R&AW chief Amarjit Singh Dulat says, "This is an initiative taken by a gentleman who has been working for years on India-Pakistan peace: OP Shah...We thought this letter might be of some help, some value and it is not only Kashmiris or Indians who have signed that letter, there are Pakistanis as well...I have a lot of respect for Dr Farooq Abdullah and when OP Shah called me and said that Dr Farooq is signing that letter, I said that I have no problem in signing; I signed it...He has been saying for a long time that we need to have peace...I don't think this letter is going to make that much difference. It's only a question of adding to a sentiment which we feel there is now. Because when RSS leaders talk about talking to Pakistan, that means there is somewhere some people are thinking of talking to Pakistan. So, if they are thinking we should also think. I don't think there is anything wrong in that. The whole Kashmiri leadership has contributed to this letter..."

Ballistic missiles was never part of the agenda that was discussed, not part of MoU and never on the table", says Pak PM @CMShehbaz in his joint presser with Iran President in Islamabad
