Sekuru, you’ve opened old wounds there.
There are many things that happened behind the scenes that we deliberately chose not to ventilate publicly, in the interests of harmony. Let me share just a few, in the hope of giving you fuller context:
1. That AGM
At that AGM, several large institutions fraudulently voted shares they neither owned nor held proxies for. I was in possession of written voting instructions from the true beneficial holders.
Muzukuru wenyu is a lawyer, Sekuru. Do you genuinely think I would walk into a meeting of that magnitude without knowing exactly where I stood?
Some of the very institutions that publicly demonised me later apologised in writing and formally asked me to withdraw litigation I had already commenced. We reconciled. But what the public never knew is that fraud had occurred.
I later addressed this in an interview with a young Sunday Mail editor (now sadly departed). I said what needed to be said.
2. The Mascom transaction
That transaction remains the single most important deal Econet ever executed.
At the time, the country had no functional currency. Institutions holding Strive’s personal guarantees (given in support of the public company) called in their security. This forced the sale of his personal shares, reducing him from about 60% to roughly 26%.
He never reclaimed those shares from Econet while I was on the Board. He sacrificed his personal stake to settle company obligations.
The only viable way to raise foreign currency was to sell Strive’s Mascom stake. He was prepared to make that sacrifice again. This time, however, he had to be compensated — and the only currency available was Econet shares.
We acquired the Mascom stake for US$11.5m worth of Econet Shares and later sold it for US$14.5m. That US$14.5m is what enabled Econet to become Zimbabwe’s number-one network. Without it, competitors would have overtaken us.
One of the shareholders you reference met Tex Edwards on a Saturday and openly boasted that while blacks were reclaiming farms, whites were quietly taking over companies like Econet. Tex Edwards, being from NewZealand was horrified. The young successful international tech entrepreneur, Kevin Kachidza might have attended that meeting as well. If you hear Kevin speak without seeing him, you would think he is white.
I had stepped away from that transaction because the same community had successfully protested to Strive against my involvement. Tex called me that same Saturday, persuaded me to return and lead the transaction. I did.
Those harbouring takeover ambitions have never forgiven me for that. The summoned me for a meeting, requested me to switch sides against promises of board appointments on several companies. I declined.

If you understood these dynamics, Sekuru, you might soften your attacks on Strive.
You and I both know there was — and still is — a hidden hand (the old money) that once controlled the economy from the shadows. It hasn’t disappeared. So we tread carefully.
Strive has made profound, selfless sacrifices for his shareholders — sacrifices that cannot be repaid, and that he has never sought to be repaid.
Thanks for keeping your Econet shares. You never disappoint Sekuru. You know where true value is.
@zsetrader you’re right that Infraco is a diff story from fintech. but that’s the point, econet is separating the business so each part can be valued properly. If u want pure platform growth, you can take the cash and move on. If u want stable USD linked infrastructure cashflows -> InfraCo
real, Infraco isn’t “stealing the platform.” It’s simply separating assets for transparency and capital access. The critique should be technical , not hysterical and wrong
Given how Econet has unlocked value for its shareholders what can other companies listed on the ZSE do?
Or is it time to have a serious conversation with ZSE, RBZ and Treasury?
