THE GREAT PRICE DISCOVERY

There was once a town famous for its perfectly functioning weighing scale.

Every evening, merchants used it to decide the final weight of everything sold in the market.

One day, a committee arrived.

“We can make the final weight more accurate.”

The merchants asked how.

“Price discovery.”

Nobody understood what that meant, which was reassuring because it sounded important.

So the committee installed a new machine.

A few days passed.

Nobody quite understood what the machine was doing.

Sometimes a sack that had weighed 100 kg all afternoon would suddenly show 96 kg, only to return to 100 a few minutes later.

Sometimes two identical sacks would somehow finish the day with noticeably different weights.

Sometimes the machine would swing wildly in the final minutes, while the merchants were still buying and selling based on whatever number flashed on the screen.

People complained.

A few merchants demanded that the old scale be brought back.

The committee assured everyone there was nothing to worry about.

“These are just temporary issues. The new system will improve price discovery.”

Then one day, a sack that had weighed 100 kg all afternoon was placed on the machine near closing time.

It showed 98 kg.

Then 96.

Then 94.

The market closed.

Everyone started shouting.

Some merchants rushed to sell.
Others cancelled orders.
A few checked whether somebody had actually stolen grain from the sack.

The committee remained calm.

“Please don’t panic. The machine has discovered the true weight.”

So 94 kg became the official weight of the sack.

The next day, the same sack was placed on the same machine.

99.8 kg.

The merchants stared at the display.

One of them finally asked:

“Yesterday you discovered it was 94 kg.”

The committee nodded.

“And today you’ve discovered it is 99.8 kg?”

Another nod.

The old merchant standing nearby asked:

“So which one was the true weight?”

The committee smiled:

“Yes.”
