क्या यह चुनाव प्रबंधन है या मनमाना निर्णय?
221 उम्मीदवारों वाला चुनाव कोई अचानक बनी परिस्थिति नहीं थी।
ऐसी अस्थिरता से चुनाव प्रक्रिया की गंभीरता पर प्रश्न उठना स्वाभाविक है।

I was recently sitting with a senior partner of my law firm at a gathering.

Everyone was a few drinks down.

This partner was in a jolly mood and was talking about how he built his practice.

His team had done very well financially in the last year and he was in a mood to celebrate.

“Don’t ever forget this” he said. “Knowledge of the law is important. But the older you grow, you will learn that law is more about who you know rather than what you know”.

“Especially if you want to succeed in a law firm. Everyone will eventually expect you to get clients”.

I was very curious so I asked him further questions and I was amazed at what I learnt.

He was still in touch with his college mates. He still had numbers of his school friends. All these people he knew since his college days, are now general counsels in major MNCs. Some have left law but are at senior positions in corporates. All these people give him work.

And his relationships with them are not just transactional. He genuinely likes these people. He cares about them.

Whether you like to admit it or not, as a lawyer, you need to build your ‘network’. So start early, I wish I had.

Don’t forget your old friends. Don’t let distance come in the way. Reach out to them. Not with the expectation that you will get something in return, but with the knowledge that it won’t hurt if you do.
