Urgent: Ambazonia Separatists Kidnap Ndu Council Staffer After Mistaking Civil Administration Training for Military Role

A staff member of the Ndu Council in Cameroon’s Northwest Region has spent six days in captivity after being abducted by armed separatists who mistakenly believed he was a member of the military.

The council worker, a graduate of the National School of Local Administration (NASLA) in Buea, was travelling to Bamenda to attend a meeting under the World Bank–supported PROLOG programme, which supports development projects for local councils, when he was kidnapped.

In a video circulating online, separatist fighters are seen interrogating the victim and accusing him of being part of the military. Their claim appears to stem from photos found on his phone showing a simplified training exercise conducted during studies at NASLA.

However, NASLA is a civil service training institution that prepares administrators for Cameroon’s councils and regional authorities. The training its students undergo is related to public administration and civic service, not military operations.

The misunderstanding has nonetheless left the council employee in captivity while his family struggles to secure his release. Sources close to the family say nearly four million CFA francs has already been paid in ransom.

The abduction is part of a growing pattern of kidnappings targeting staff of the Ndu Council. Local sources indicate that seven council workers have been kidnapped, with ransoms ranging between two million and seven million CFA francs paid by victims or their families, often without assistance from the council.

One council employee was also killed by separatist fighters several months ago, further highlighting the risks faced by civil servants working in the region amid Cameroon’s ongoing Anglophone conflict.
