so apparently people are getting flown out of floods by drones in China now
like literally hanging beneath a giant DJI drone and getting flown to dry ground
it was during the recent floods in Guangxi, more than 400 drone pilots showed up with over 300 aircraft
> most of the drones carried food, water, and medicine into villages that roads and boats couldn’t reach
> then rescuers started using the biggest ones to carry people.
> one of them was DJI’s FC200, a cargo drone built to lift up to 440 pounds
> the drone lowers a cable and harness, the person gets strapped in, and a human pilot flies them out remotely using the live camera feed
> one rescue was absolutely insane
> a man was stranded on a roof in Liulan village with floodwater rising around him.

I love ridge hikes and the one below is my absolute favorite - the Haldigrat ridge in Nidwalden. This knife-edge ridge begins at the top of the Alpboden chairlift (1,941m) and leads up the summit of the Brisen (2,404m). Stunning panoramic views is an understatement! 🇨🇭
I was just in Mumbai, and I have to give them credit for the progress they’re making on infrastructure. The new Aqua Line metro is phenomenal. But the amount of work India still has to do on basic cleanliness and sanitation and it is hard to understand until you see it yourself. Would love for more westerners to go just to understand how wealthy they are, but that's a different point.
Mumbai is completely surrounded by water, yet there are almost no places where people can actually enjoy the water. The beaches are filled with trash, the water is badly contaminated, and almost nobody swims, even when it’s brutally hot outside. Walking on the beach is just mud and trash meeting filthy water on the horizon.
There are much poorer places around the world where people can still use the beaches. This is not just about money. India has gone decades without adequate trash collection, sewage treatment, or enforcement for a population of more than a billion people. At this point, the scale of the problem feels almost impossible, and the oceans around the world are paying the price for Indias garbage output as well.
I like the direction Modi is taking the country, but India needs to treat cleanup like a national emergency. Stop with the small campaigns and organize a full scale blitz.
Offer unemployed people paid work picking up trash, clearing drains and waterways, cleaning beaches, and maintaining public spaces. Give them proper equipment and supervision. Then build the collection and waste processing systems needed to stop everything from becoming filthy again a week later.
India has shown that it can build metros, airports, highways, and digital infrastructure. Clean streets and usable water should be treated as infrastructure too.
Mumbai should have one of the greatest waterfronts in the world. Instead, it's has basically an irrelevant feature of the city and feels surrendered to sewage and garbage.

This is Aryan(@4rynv) and he is building the world's cheapest lithography system.
He has been trying to build a HackerFab at VJTI, but could not immediately secure the required funding and support so we invited him to intern at our lab at IITB over the summers.
In just north of 2 months, he built a safety-critical, fully-autonomous control system for our sputter, and has made significant progress on building what we believe to be the world's cheapest micron scale lithography system.
It will cost less than an Iphone, and be simple enough that a high schooler can assemble it, and Aryan will be leading this project as he establishes a HackerFab at VJTI.
HackerFab's so far, have only been built in "elite" universities like CMU and IITB, all of whom rely heavily on access to an existing semiconductor fabrication ecosystem(inluding professors, nanofab access, etc.) for all things from simply accessing Silicon wafers and specialty chemicals, to directed guidance from domain experts.
Aryan aims to show this can be done in a college without any of this, and become a true enabler for the movement to spread, for continue democratisation of access to semiconductor fabrication.
If he is successful, it demonstrates that anyone, anywhere in the world can do this.
He is one of the best practical engineers I have had the pleasure of working with, and I am confident he will succeed.
