I kept hearing that Pope Leo XIV was “far left,” and for a while I assumed there must be some truth to it.

Then I started actually listening to him.

Not clips. Not political commentary. Not somebody telling me what I was supposed to think about him. His speeches. His words. His teaching.

And I have completely changed my opinion of him.

On immigration, he has acknowledged that a country has the right to control its borders. But he does not stop there. He has also told immigrants that entering another country comes with responsibilities. Learn the language. Respect the laws. Learn the customs. Participate in the life of the community.

That struck me because it is neither “open borders” nor a rejection of the immigrant. It is order and responsibility alongside human dignity.

Then there is abortion.

Pope Leo has been absolutely clear that the right to life begins at conception and continues until natural death. In his encyclical, he specifically named induced abortion and euthanasia among choices the Church considers gravely wrong.

And now, as he prepares to go to France, where abortion has been placed in the constitution and assisted dying has advanced into law, the central theme of his visit is essentially a defense of human life: “That the world may have life.” (AP News)

Then listen to what he tells young people.

Stop being afraid of commitment.

Stop being afraid of your vocation.

Stop being afraid of marriage.

When speaking to hundreds of thousands of young people in Spain, he congratulated couples preparing for marriage and told them plainly: “You don’t have to be afraid to get married and start a family.”

In a culture constantly telling young adults to delay marriage, delay children, chase themselves first and keep every option open forever, hearing the Pope tell young people that marriage and family are something beautiful enough to embrace instead of fear hit me hard. (National Catholic Register)

The more I listen to Pope Leo, the more ridiculous our political labels start to look.

Borders matter.

Laws matter.

The unborn matter.

Migrants matter.

Marriage matters.

Families matter.

Human dignity matters.

None of those things cancel the others out.

That is Catholicism.

I thought I had Pope Leo figured out before I really listened to him.

I was wrong.

And honestly, the more I hear from him, the more I love this Pope.

Today Holy Mother Church celebrates the feast of one of my favorite saints! St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina.

He spent up to 16 hours a day hearing confessions, drawing souls back to grace with a piercing gift for reading hearts. He founded a hospital, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (Home for the Relief of Suffering), because love of Christ meant love of the suffering body too.

On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the stigmata while praying in a church, and the wounds remained visible on his hands, feet, and side for the rest of his life. The blood from his wounds was said to smell like perfume, and while listening to confessions, the saint would smell flowers as sins were confessed.

Some penitents waited two weeks just to visit him in the confessional, and he could read the hearts of penitents, reminding them of sins that were forgotten or omitted. He didn't let a single soul walk away half-repentant. As he put it himself: "Confession is the soul's bath. You must go at least once a week. I do not want souls to stay away from confession more than a week."

His words still steady anxious hearts everywhere: "Pray, hope, and don't worry."

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Januarius, Bishop of Benevento, who gave his life for Christ during Emperor Diocletian's persecution around 305 AD.

I for one find his story to be quite fascinating, Tradition holds that Januarius was born into an aristocratic family in Benevento, about 150 miles southeast of Rome, and he became a priest at age fifteen in Benevento and the bishop of either Benevento or Naples at twenty. When persecution broke out, he did not hide. Instead, Bishop Januarius visited them in prison to encourage them, but he himself was arrested and imprisoned alongside his own deacon and lector. After enduring interrogation and, according to tradition, being thrown to wild beasts unharmed, he and his companions were beheaded for refusing to renounce Christ.

Legend holds that a holy woman named Eusebia collected some of his blood after his death and stored it in glass vials, which were later enshrined in the church next to his body. Since then, something extraordinary has continued: three times each year his dried blood liquefies in the presence of the faithful, on his feast day today, the first Saturday of May, and December 16th.

Thousands still gather in Naples Cathedral to witness this moment, and no natural explanation has been given. No modern science has come to conclusions about why this happens, though the phenomenon has been tested frequently and seems genuine. It stands as a powerful sign pointing believers back to the reality of the Resurrection, that grace can touch matter itself, and that the saints remain close to those who ask for their prayers.
