@VPNSMOKESCREEN yeah exactly. almost everyone picks up a language to describe the elements that go into what they’re making, what they’re trying to achieve… a lot of it isn’t very formalized but it works. especially for like techno where most have minimal understanding of conventional theory

@VPNSMOKESCREEN i would bet a lot of producers have an understanding of music theory whether they know it or not. music theory isn’t just understanding harmony. a lot of producers can’t speak to harmony at all but have a good understanding of the language of say.. rhythm.. texture.. etc

@VPNSMOKESCREEN i think its difficult to not pick up some music theory on the way to making any sort of good music. the barrier of entry for making ambient is low, but that’s also why most ambient sucks :) if it’s too easy, everyone will do it and now nothing stands out.
