ये तस्वीर हैं इंग्लैंड के लंकाशायर में डार्वेन नाम की जगह की। महात्मा गांधी को 1931 में इंग्लैंड दौरे के वक्त यहां आने का न्यौता मिला था। उन्हें आमंत्रित करनेवाला डेविस घराना था। डेविस घराना कपड़ा मिल चलाता था लेकिन उस दौर में बुरे हाल से गुज़र रहा था। उसकी बदहाली की एक बड़ी वजह खुद महात्मा गांधी थे। गांधी जी ने देसी व्यापार पर अंग्रेज़ी शिकंजा कसता देख विदेशी माल के बहिष्कार का आह्वान किया था। उसी आह्वान का असर था कि इंग्लैंड में बन रहे कपड़े की खपत भारत में अचानक घटती चली गई और देखते ही देखते नुकसान उठा रहे कपड़ा मिलों ने मज़दूरों की छंटनी शुरू कर दी। डेविस घराना चाहता था कि गांधी जी खुद आकर श्रमिकों की हालत देखें। पर्सी डेविस को उम्मीद थी कि वो महात्मा गांधी को विदेशी माल के बहिष्कार के फैसले से डिगा लेंगे।

25 सितंबर 1931 को गांधी डार्वेन पहुंचे। आशंका जताई जा रही थी कि परेशान हाल श्रमिक उनका ज़बरदस्त विरोध करेंगे लेकिन जब गांधी पहुंचे तो नज़ारा एकदम बदला हुआ था। उनका शानदार स्वागत किया जा रहा था। अपनी ही सरकार के खिलाफ लड़ रहे बूढ़े आदमी के इस्तकबाल में श्रमिक और उनके परिवार बिछे जा रहे थे। गुस्टा ग्रीन जो उस वक्त महज़ दस साल के थे, याद करते हैं कि उनके पिता किसी तरह उन्हें महात्मा गांधी के दर्शन कराने के इच्छुक थे ताकि गुस्टा भविष्य में सबको बता सकें कि उन्होंने गांधी से मुलाकात की थी। गांधी जी से मिलने गए गुस्टा जब रास्ते में उन्हें खड़े मिले तो गांधी ने बड़े प्यार से उसके बालों को सहलाया और मुस्कुराकर आगे बढ़ गए।

ये हैरानी की बात थी कि इन श्रमिकों की मुसीबत का कारण जो आदमी था वो उसके संघर्ष के समर्थन में खड़े थे। गांधी जी ने दो दिन उसी इलाके में बिताए और तीसरे दिन दुनिया भर की प्रेस को संबोधित किया। उन्होंने साफ कहा कि वो विदेशी सामान के बहिष्कार को जारी रखेंगे। कहा जाता है कि कुछ बूढ़े बुनकरों ने उन्हें खराब होती जा रही अपनी माली हालत की जानकारी दी। बताया कि वो गरीब होते जा रहे हैं। गांधी जी ने उन्हें जवाब दिया- प्यारे दोस्तों, तुम्हें कोई अंदाज़ा तक नहीं कि गरीबी कहते किसे हैं।

सच है, गांधी भारत की गरीबी देखकर इंग्लैंड में पहुंचे थे, इसलिए अच्छी तरह जानते थे कि भारत की हालत इंग्लैंड से भी जर्जर है।

गांधी को भद्दी गालियां देनेवालों को ध्यान से देखिए। उनमें ज़्यादातर अपनी ज़िंदगी में एकाध ही किताब पढ़े होंगे। ये जीवन में बेहद नाखुश लोग मिलेंगे। आक्रामकता और अंसतोष अलग झलकेगा। किसी धर्म या जाति से इनकी घृणा आप साफ समझ सकेंगे, चाहे ये खुलकर अभिव्यक्त करें या महीन होकर। गांधी को बंटवारे का ज़िम्मेदार ज़रूर मानेंगे लेकिन विभाजन के वक्त की जटिलताओं और दोनों तरफ की सांप्रदायिक शक्तियों को लेकर इनका ज्ञान शुतुरमुर्ग साइज़ अंडे जितना होगा। इनमें आप गांधी के बरअक्स किसी नेता को खड़ा कर देने का बचकाना उत्साह ज़रूर ज़रूर देख सकेंगे। इनमें गांधी के अहिंसा सिद्धांत को समझने का ना धैर्य होगा ना क्षमता, बल्कि ये उसे “कोई एक गाल पर मारे तो दूसरा आगे कर दो” जितना सिंपल मानकर खिल्ली उड़ाएंगे!!

ये केवल भद्दे चुटकुले जितना ध्यान देने लायक लोग हैं। इनको समझाने की कोशिश करने से बेहतर है इनकी स्तरहीन बातें सुनकर ये कहकर टालना- भाई जी बहुत जबर पॉइंट ऑफ व्यू है आपका.. और बताओ इस बार इलेक्सन का क्या लग रहा आपको??
