No words are big enough right now to overcome this empty feeling in the stomach. We were close, really close to another final but it wasn’t enough. We’ve given everything over these last 7 weeks and to fall short is hard to take!

I know the expectations are high and rightly so, we’ve been knocking on the door for 8 years now but again are missing that final piece of the jigsaw! That’s where we have to go away, process it and find a way to get better. I’m so proud of the boys and what we have shown throughout this tournament - some tough games and tough environments that we have overcome.

Some memories that will stay with us players and I’m sure you fans for a long long time! Going for glory doesn’t always mean you will get it. You have to fight for it, get knocked down, pick yourself up and go again and that’s what we will do, there’s no other way but to keep believing and keeping pushing.

Today, Major Akshay Girish should have been cutting a cake for his 40th birthday. Instead, a nation lights candles for a memory.
We often speak of patriotism and nationalism in abstract terms. We talk about loving the country. But on November 29, 2016, Major Akshay Girish defined what those words actually mean.
When the alarm sounded in Nagrota, Major Akshay wasn't on the roster to lead the intervention. A younger officer was assigned to the Quick Reaction Team. It was not Akshay’s turn to face the fire.
But true leadership is not about rosters; it is about responsibility.
He looked at the situation. He looked at the danger. And he made a choice that echoes in the halls of valor forever. He told the younger officer to stand down. He volunteered to go instead.
Why? Because in the Indian Army, a leader protects his men before he protects himself. Because he knew that if anyone had to take a bullet that day, he wanted it to be him, not the young boy under his command.
We sleep peacefully in our homes because men like Major Akshay are awake at the borders. We live our lives without fear because he walked straight into it.
Patriotism isn't just waving a flag; it is the courage to stand between that flag and those who wish to tear it down. Nationalism isn't just a sentiment; it is the blood spilled on the uniform so that the Tricolor never touches the ground.
Major Akshay took the bullets. He took the grenade. He saved 16 innocent women and children, and he saved a young officer’s life by trading it for his own.
Freedom is never free. It is paid for in the tears of a mother, the strength of a wife, the future of a daughter, and the silence of a hero who went too soon.
Happy 40th Birthday, Major. You paid the bill for our liberty. We will never forget the debt.
