For those that want to go into plantain farming and you don’t have money to install drip irrigation on your farm

This is how I would turn the ₦4 million into ₦12 million in 6 months with ginger farming.

Stay with me

First, the land.

Don’t buy land.

Lease it.

Find a farming community in any state (Ogun state preferably) with land suitable for ginger and lease 1 acre for a year.

Budget about ₦100,000 for the lease,in many farming communities it can be cheaper.

But there’s one important condition:

The land must have access to water.

Look for a farm with a well or a flowing river that doesn’t dry up during the dry season.

After leasing the acre, you’re only going to use 3 plots out of that acre,the reason I said lease 1 acre is because most gaming communities don’t lease less than an acre .

Clear them.

At about ₦10,000 per plot:

3 plots = ₦30,000

Now the biggest expense:

Ginger seed.

You need about 9 bags to plant the 3 plots.

You are in luck because right now the price of seed ginger has dropped and it is around ₦300,000 per bag:

9 × ₦300,000 = ₦2.7 million

Next…

Manure.

Budget for 6 bags of chicken manure.

6 × ₦4,000 = ₦24,000

You only need two workers to manage the farm.

Pay them ₦50,000 each per month for 6 months:

₦100,000 × 6 = ₦600,000

Then we budget for crop protection and fertilizer.

Fungicide:

₦96,000

NPK fertilizer:

₦56,000 × 3 bags = ₦168,000

For irrigation:

2-inch surface pump = ₦160,000

100m 2-inch layflat hose = ₦75,000

Now let’s add everything.

Land lease — ₦100k
Land clearing — ₦30k
Seed ginger — ₦2.7m
Manure — ₦24k
Labour — ₦600k
Fungicide — ₦96k
Fertilizer — ₦168k
Surface pump — ₦160k
Layflat hose — ₦75k

Total estimated cost = ₦3,953,000

So basically…

About ₦4 million.

Now let’s talk about the harvest.

Because we’re harvesting at 6 months, the expected yield would be lower than ginger harvested at 8–9 months.

The 9 bags of seed usually produce at least 4× or more the planted quantity:

9 × 4 = 36 bags

Because this is newly harvested ginger, we’re using a lower selling price than older ginger.

Let’s assume ₦350,000 per bag which can be more but we are low balling it.

36 × ₦350,000 = ₦12.6 million

And I’ve allocated the ₦600,000 budget to cover transportation during harvest.

And that’s how you turn your 4million naira into 12million naira in 6months

Welcome to today’s ginger class.

The money in farming isn’t made when you harvest. It’s made when you plan the farm correctly.
