‘Not even allowed to say goodbye’: Punjabi grandmother deported from the US after 30 years

Harjit Kaur, 73, was removed to Delhi after three decades in the US. Her lawyer says she was moved at night, shackled, kept in bare concrete cells and denied basics: “She was not even allowed to say goodbye to her family or collect her belongings.”

The Sikh Coalition called it “beyond unacceptable” for an elderly widow with hypertension and diabetes.

Kaur migrated in 1992, worked as a seamstress, paid taxes and volunteered at gurdwaras; a removal order was issued in 2005, but she complied with ICE check-ins for 13+ years.

Protests followed in California. ICE said she “lost” all appeals up to the Ninth Circuit and that it is enforcing the law.
