Renewable Energy Sector Fully Integrated in EPR Programne, Prof. Barikor assures stakeholders….

The Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) Prof. Innocent Barikor says the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Programme is designed to enable the implementation of Circular Economy in all sectors including the renewable energy sector.

Speaking as a panelist during the session on Powering Tomorrow, Recycling Today, at the just concluded Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF), Prof. Barikor said EPR makes it mandatory for producers to retrieve their products from the environment at the end of their lifecycle.

“ Producers and developers of these panels, batteries and others should realize that they will take responsibilities for the retrieval of their products from the environment. We have already started registering them under the Producer Responsibility Organisations to ensure we have them on a database. This enables us to track and ensure producers take care of the renewable energy infrastructure when their lives end”.

He promised that the Agency remains committed to entrenching best practices in the sector, describing the recent clampdown on recycling facilities in Ogijo as an effort in that regard.

“In Ogijo we shutdown a number of facilities due to their unsustainable recycling methods and to ensure they align with the regulations and become more responsible in terms of their environmental behaviour. We have established a protocol for compliance and we will continue our regular monitoring. Enforcement is a last resort. We have to ensure there is a balance between profit making and environmental sustainability. With EPR we will be able to apply all the necessary checks”.

Prof. Barikor pledged that the Agency will continue to provide the regulatory support needed for viable recycling of renewable energy infrastructure, adding that Nigeria boasts of several local examples of recyclers utilizing best available technology in their operations.
