Just the other day, I went to the market to get some foodstuffs. I was buying rice when I looked to my left and saw a woman buying rice too. But the rice she was buying was very black and had lots of stones in it. My heart broke, and my eyes filled with tears. What broke me even more was that the rice was very cheap.
I don’t buy bags of rice because I live alone. Rather, I buy half a paint bucket at a time because whenever I bought a full bag, it would eventually spoil. But that’s not the point.
What I’m trying to say is that I had to buy the same rice I normally buy, which costs ₦9,000 for one paint bucket, and I bought two for her.
I am not telling you this so you can think I’m a good or humble person. I’m telling you this so you can understand just how badly the Nigerian economy has deteriorated. I want you to see beyond the lies our leaders are selling us.
A nation where citizens struggle to afford basic food, and where decent food has become a luxury, is a nation that has failed its people.
Thank you.
