Soooo which one is it Dave?
I included this moving with Arday’s friend, world-leading autism expert, Simon Baron-Cohen in my piece. I urge you to listen to it. Not just because he talks about his loving gentle friend but because he also sets down a precise chronology of events.
Arday was cleared of plagiarism under Cambridge’s rules: that the award-giving institution investigates. He accompanied Arday to Liverpool John Moores in February. He was found to have credited the underlying work but incorrectly cited it on each occasion. He was cleared of plagiarism. It was Cambridge’s reversal of its initial decision that damned him. He was literally thrown to the mob.
In the next 9 days, Baron-Cohen says his mental health spiralled.

Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of 3, Jason Arday learnt to read & write at 18. On Monday he’ll start work as @Cambridge_Uni’s youngest black Professor. It was a real privilege to help tell his story @BBCNews
Holy shit... Wired reports that back in May, the U.S. Military was testing an experimental GPS jammer and and caused a civilian plane to crash into the side of a mountain, killing everyone on board.
@telephonehigh@pueringeniosus If you want to enjoy music for the community, then go to local venues and support local musicians at open mics and free/cheap gigs. If you can’t afford to support touring professional musicians; whose talent and skill is their job, then that sucks, but you have to miss out
No, but I do think this touches on something really important.
A lot of women are yearning for a more traditional way of life as an escape from capitalism. Everyone is exhausted, overworked and has very little time for personal fulfillment. There’s a reason women fought for the ability to work, and own property. It’s because it gave them autonomy. That is an improvement, but simply gaining autonomy through access to the system, does not a happy life make. I hope we can see that going backward is never the solution. I hope we can be brave enough to believe better is possible.
it’s actually terrifying how much my brain has changed since i stopped being a bookworm. it’s not just about the attention span, though that’s definitely gone
i can’t even sit still for ten minutes without reaching for a distraction.
but the bigger shift is how it feels like my inner world has gone grey. i’m not nearly as creative as i used to be and that quiet, calm headspace i used to have is just gone. i feel like i’ve lost my vocabulary and my ability to articulate how i actually feel, so everything i say feels surface level and repetitive.
even my curiosity feels stunted. i used to wonder about things for hours, but now if i don’t get an immediate answer, i just lose interest. it’s like i traded my imagination for a shorter fuse and a total lack of focus. my personality used to have so much more color and depth, and now it feels like i'm just reacting to things instead of actually thinking. i'm just trying to remember how to be that person again.
Lady in blue, "Will student loans be the next misselling scandal?" #BBCQT
Oli Dugmore, "My three year course, £9,000 a year for the tuition, on top of that a maintenance loan, I left uni with £37,500 of debt"
"From the day I was charged RPI interest"
"Since I went to uni in 2012, the amount of interest I have accrued is £32,000"
"Was it missold to me when I was told it would cost me £9,000 a year? Yes"
"On top of that its a regressive system"
"If you're wealthy enough to pay the fees up front, you don't get charged interest - if you're rich enough you don't pay the same as me"
"The government changed the terms of the agreement, I call that loan sharking"
Fiona Bruce, "How else would you pay for university?"
Oli Dugmore, "How did you guys pay for it?"
"The state paid for it, didn't they?"
Fiona Bruce, "They did"
Oli Dugmore, "Good enough for you, good enough for me?"
had a moment washing dishes where i believed maybe for the first time ever that so long as i’m alive, i get to try again and do it differently, and it made me genuinely weep. then i picked up my phone and hopped between instagram and tiktok for 2 hours
