Nigerians celebrate when inflation drops, but many are asking: “Why is food still expensive?” The answer is simple and important.
Inflation measures the speed of price increases, not whether prices are low.
If rice moved from ₦60,000 to ₦90,000, inflation is high.
If it later moves from ₦90,000 to ₦95,000, inflation has slowed, but rice is still more expensive than before.
For prices to actually fall, Nigeria would need deflation, which is rare and can create other economic problems.
What households really need is: stable inflation, rising incomes, lower transport costs, and better food supply.
"Inflation is falling” Well that is good news for the economy, but it is not the same as “things are now cheap.”
Femi Otedola’s Massive First HoldCo Share Buying: What’s Really Happening?
Femi Otedola bought ₦77.6 billion worth of First HoldCo shares, which amounted to 706.13 million shares on 22 July 2026 through his investment vehicle, Calvados Global Services.
That transaction was only one part of a much larger buying spree that has made him the dominant shareholder in First HoldCo Plc, the parent company of First Bank of Nigeria.
a .Stake in 2025: 6.68 billion shares (15.95%)
b.Stake as of 30 July 2026: 11.77 billion shares (25.88%)
This means he has added more than 5 billion shares within about a year, making him the largest shareholder of the group.
Recent Major Purchases
22 July 2026 706.13 million shares worth ₦77.58 billion
30 July 2026 1.78 billion shares at ₦124.9 each, totaling ₦222.21 billion
The 30 July purchase was his largest single acquisition ever and pushed the value of his First HoldCo stake above $1 billion for the first time.
Why Is Otedola Buying So Aggressively?
1. Strong Profit Growth
2.The Stock Has Been One of Nigeria’s Best Performers
3.A Bigger Capital Base
4.Operational Improvements Are Being Recognized
Is This a Takeover?
Probably not.
Analysts note that Otedola is still about 1.69 billion shares away from the threshold that could trigger a mandatory takeover bid for full control of the parent company.
@Danielsavage77@EydreesShanono@UthmanTochukwu My reply was to test wether you have brain or perhaps common sense, Sadly you just proved to me you dont have any by replying " Muslims go to UK & US.... Well they speak English in those countries not Arabic language
Ahh!! that is not true from what I know. My late father-in-law was an NIA officer, and while I was at the Nigerian High Commission in Islamabad, in the Defence Section, the NIA officer attached there was a Northerner. Other NIA personnel I encountered were also Northerners. The last recruitment, as far as I know, was conducted quietly and was never publicly advertised, with only 29 people recruited. It is not an organization that recruits indiscriminately, and recruitment is not done every year. After all, it is a secret agency.”
