I have the greatest respect for Gisèle Pelicot, but it's also important to be aware of her daughter Caroline Darian's situation too.
Caroline thinks she is also a victim of Dominique Pelicot. Her mother doesn't think she was.
“She is not able to recognise that I probably was drugged by my father. It is a way for her to protect herself.” Caroline no longer speaks to Gisèle.
It is so painful when a father's violence tears mothers and children apart. I can totally understand why Caroline feels the need to be no contact now.
“Incest in France is taboo. And there are a lot of victims where it’s always the same situation. To recognise that your daughter, your son, is a victim – it’s quite difficult.
“I think my mum is not able to recognise it because, otherwise, I think she’s going to die.”
Caroline encourages survivors to share their stories of abuse.
