My favorite part of Twitter is when people share a perspective that I would not have access to just through my lived experience. It not only opens my eyes to my privilege but also to the joys and struggles of humanity. I’m going to be more consistent and retweet when I see them.
Tomorrow I start year 31 in the classroom, here’s a list of the lessons I’ve learned over my 3 decades working with teens…
1. Don’t fart in class
2. If you ever fall, they will act like you are old and broke a hip.
3. If you feed them then you have to always feed them.
Wiping your ass isn't the full extent of personal hygiene, but we all get that it's, like, necessary. It's not that hard and the benefits are clear...it's certainly not all you do, but you do it!
Voting is the ass-wiping of democracy.
A friend of mine died today. He was also my mayor, and he'd been my mayor for 16 years...which is a very long time. John Engen taught me a bunch of stuff, but particularly he shaved down some of my cynicism by just doing the work of leading where I could see it being done.
@sage_stage @mrskellylove @brennke Don’t all students deserve a classroom that lets them achieve? Sending a student to another class is not doing anything for the student or their peers. Instead, you add to the false idea that honors means teachers don’t have to deal with academic differences or behavioral issues.
@sage_stage @mrskellylove @brennke I would ? what you mean by “the culture of the class” If it’s an issue of skills, it’s a call for the teacher to differentiate, & if it’s a behavioral issue, how would moving them out fix it? Do students in honors classes deserve a better learning environment than their peers?
The unwillingness to enact smart, responsible gun legislation is the willingness for children and teachers to be killed. To be traumatized. To be scared.
I want to teach. I want my students to learn. WITHOUT the fear that has become an everyday part of American education.
I decided I’m not done. For non-educators, these are some realities of school in America:
We have regular active shooter trainings & drills. When talking about the options (run, hide, fight), I remember that the last one isn’t to save our lives but the lives of those next door.
Tomorrow should be a joyful day full of celebrating the end of the year. Instead, I will be reassuring students I have a plan for their safety should our school be the next.
Our country values guns over children. Over their lives. Their mental health. Their memories. Their joy.
The windows of my classroom don’t open. Students don’t complain about a lack of air flow or not getting the benefits of nice weather. They worry about what we would do if there is an active shooter. I’m asked this question multiple times each year.

Friendly reminder to my Wisconsin friends that you probably have school board elections tomorrow. The people who make decisions for our schools are important. Please research the candidates and VOTE!
I've decided I'm not going to track grad school by how many classes I've taken or years it has been, but by the number of yellow highlighters I've gone through. Current count: 3
