If Israel Isn't Israel, Why Did the Jews Return Exactly as the Prophets Said?

Many people in the church today insist that modern Israel has nothing to do with biblical prophecy.

They tell us the Jewish return was merely political. A coincidence. A product of diplomacy, wealthy benefactors, or governments.

Yet Scripture presents a very different story.

Long before Theodore Herzl, long before the British Mandate, and long before the United Nations voted to recognize Israel, God declared that He would scatter the Jewish people among the nations and then bring them home again.

"The LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other..." (Deuteronomy 28:64)

But scattering was never the end of the story.

"For I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land." (Ezekiel 36:24)

The question is simple:

How many coincidences does it take to fulfill a prophecy?

◈ Consider what actually happened.

Jerusalem fell. The Temple was destroyed. The Jewish people were dispersed across the globe.

For nearly two thousand years they survived expulsions, persecutions, pogroms, and attempted extermination, yet retained their identity as a distinct people.

Then they returned to the very land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

In 1948, Israel's Jewish population was roughly 650,000. Today, nearly 8 million Jews live in Israel, and close to half of the world's Jewish population now resides there. Thousands continue making aliyah every year.

No other dispersed nation has experienced anything quite like it.

The issue is not whether Israel's restoration is remarkable.

The issue is whether God foretold it.

And He did.

◉ The strongest objection actually proves the point.

Critics often argue, "Most Jews in Israel do not believe in Jesus."

But the prophets never predicted that Israel would return in faith.

They predicted the opposite sequence.

Notice Ezekiel carefully:

"For I will take you from among the nations... and bring you into your own land." (Ezekiel 36:24)

Only after the regathering does God say:

"Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you... A new heart also will I give you." (Ezekiel 36:25-26)

The order matters.

Regathering first.

Spiritual restoration later.

Ezekiel 37 teaches the same truth. The bones come together before the breath enters them. National restoration precedes national conversion.

This is why Paul writes:

"Israel has experienced a partial hardening until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in, and so all Israel shall be saved." (Romans 11:25-26)

The existence of unbelief in Israel is not a problem for biblical prophecy.

It is part of biblical prophecy.

✦ The story is bigger than a modern nation-state.

Some point to secularism, unbelief, or moral confusion within Israel as evidence against God's prophetic hand.

Yet Scripture never teaches that regathered Israel would immediately become spiritually transformed.

Jesus warned that the last days would resemble "the days of Noah" and "the days of Lot" (Luke 17:26-30). The moral confusion celebrated throughout much of the modern world reminds us that humanity remains fallen and in need of redemption.

Israel is no exception.

That is why Scripture speaks of a future refining:

"Alas! for that day is great... it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it." (Jeremiah 30:7)

And again:

"I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined." (Zechariah 13:9)

God's plan was never merely to bring the Jewish people back to the land.

His plan is to bring them back to Himself.

❖ God is the original Zionist.

Long before modern Zionism existed, God promised Abraham a land, a nation, and a future.

"For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever." (Genesis 13:15)

The prophets never treated that promise as temporary.

"I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them." (Amos 9:15)

God did not merely promise survival.

He promised restoration.

The debate ultimately is not about politicians or governments.

It is about whether God keeps His covenants.

Through Jeremiah, the Lord anchored Israel's future to the fixed order of creation itself:

"If those ordinances depart from before me... then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever." (Jeremiah 31:36)

Every sunrise testifies that God has not abandoned Israel.

Every aliyah flight reminds us that God is still gathering His people.

The future kingdom itself is centered in Jerusalem:

"For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem." (Isaiah 2:3)

The prophets consistently place Messiah's reign in the land promised to Israel, not in some replacement geography or symbolic location.

As Messianic Jewish scholar Arnold Fruchtenbaum observed:

"The final worldwide regathering in unbelief is a preparation for the judgment and salvation of Israel."

That is exactly what Scripture describes.

✧ The story is not over.

The same God who scattered Israel is gathering Israel.

The same God who gathered Israel will refine Israel.

The same God who refines Israel will save Israel.

"They shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him..." (Zechariah 12:10)

The story does not end with regathering.

It ends with a King.

"His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives." (Zechariah 14:4)

"The LORD shall be king over all the earth." (Zechariah 14:9)

"And so all Israel shall be saved." (Romans 11:26)

If Israel's restoration is merely coincidence, then Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Paul somehow predicted the most unlikely national restoration in human history.

But if God has fulfilled the prophecies of Israel's scattering and regathering exactly as He promised, perhaps we should take the rest of Bible prophecy just as seriously.
