Track & field is one of the last places in a school where the football captain, the valedictorian, the band kid, the wrestler, and the quiet kid who never thought he belonged can all wear the same jersey.
Track does not care what a kid’s last name is, how much money he has, what side of town he lives on, or how popular he is. Out here, none of that matters. Somewhere between the workouts, the bus rides, and the meets, kids who might never have spoken to each other start to build real respect.
It is hard not to respect somebody when you have seen what they are willing to push through and how much they are willing to give.
That is a big reason track & field will always mean more to me than just times, marks, and points.
@Matt_Stepp817 I’d add some of the best coaches in the state may be those with just a few Ws more than Ls. And then seeing program growth or kids lives impacted which can’t always be quantified.
I've had multiple coaches win #UILState tell me their best coaching job wasn't done when they won state...it was taking a team with 2-8 talent and making them 7-4 #txhsfb
@BryceHoppel EXACTLY 🗣️🗣️🗣️ there is plenty of depth on a world stage and as a HS coach I can promise you there’s depth on a college and HS level as well.
Imagine a 16 year old Sophomore in High School running...
200m- 19.75
400m- 43.88
Mile- 3:45.6
5k- 12:46
Those are the equivalent times to what Cooper Lutkenhaus just ran in the 800m (1:42.27) as a 16 year old.
Insanity.
Don’t focus on the scoreboard.
Focus on doing things the right way, every single time.
Winning takes care of itself when you build the right habits.
It’s not about chasing trophies — it’s about chasing excellence in everything you do.
"The best part is he is very quick to recognize how well his offensive line blocked for him.”

OXC ran hard and had fun on a tough Garner State Park course for our last early season meet! We had 8 girls medalists and 2 boys medalists. We also had fun running in our Chicken Leg brand shorts! Next up, Eldo!
Administrators take care of your teachers especially your coaches! Coaches do a lot more for little. They arrive early, stay late,& do all the rest in between with less time & very little pay. They love helping kids. They are first called on for many things! #coaching#Leadership
Just my suggestion, if you are a #txhsfb athlete starting practice this week, you are about to start a grind that lasts hopefully until Christmas.
Take the weekend off, rest, hydrate and get ready to work on Monday. Just my unsolicited advice
“What are YOU doing to keep kids in your program?” As coaches we have to actively keep this is mind as we build our programs. @thsca#CoachingSchool#PoweringGirlsForward
When you’re a coach and a mom making it work is hard. Thank you @THSCAcoaches for making it a little easier for coaches like me to invest in the profession. The boys first year attending clinic with me and @taylor_jarryd
“Before you really can be good at the game, you gotta love the game. Just let them get out there and enjoy the game because once they develop that love, then they want to learn and listen to the people that want to teach them. You gotta have a passion for something to be good at it,” Michael Jordan
