@pastor_adam@WillStandridge@MBTSDoctoral Thankful you are still at it! Our PhD class is still 5/5 I think.
I wish we had cleaner onboarding and stronger retention in SBC life; associations could be the key but those are a mixed bag. Either way, our "Omaha beach" has too many casualties in the assault on darkness.
@pastor_adam@WillStandridge Some likely. The ones I know got kicked in the teeth, found something temporary, and then never got back into vocational ministry. Only 2/5 in my MA cohort still in, and the other guy was already a 20+yr veteran. I recall older pastors saying it would happen but doubted. No more.
@joeyallendazole It was excellent! I dropped you and Sam an email about it last night. It was applicable to some things I’d wondered about in the past but had no hard data. Nice work!!!
I mentioned last year that function and not merely office was at the core of these debates. The Truth and Unity Amendment will hopefully offer more clarity than the Law Amendment did.
Whether we consider Baptist history in particular or Protestant history in general, the preaching of God’s Word on the Lord’s Day is a uniquely authoritative act and a means of grace, and should be reserved for qualified elders. I believe churches should act accordingly for biblical, theological, and ecclesial health and consistency.
Could the Truth and Unity Amendment be abused to withhold teaching and leading opportunities from women outside office of elder and preaching on the Lord’s Day in ways that are unbiblical and overreaching compared to history? Of course. Any amendment could be. But lack of clarity is also misused, as we are currently witnessing.
But I don’t think the plain reading of the amendment lends itself to a degradation of women in ministry and I think it gives relative freedom for churches to practice according to their local autonomy, wisdom, and systems. One person’s interpretation doesn’t bind churches.
Relatedly, it’s also worth remembering that churches voluntarily cooperate within the SBC. The SBC doesn’t tell churches how to behave. This is Baptist polity 101. As such, churches can feel free to align with another denomination/association or none at all if they so choose, and vice versa.
It’s time to stop arguing about this and get on with the work. Let’s hope this year’s annual meeting does that.
Promised my teen boys we’d re-open the weight room this summer after tennis season came to an end. Then they bought me this flag for my birthday-I think my 12 year old was making a statement about my age. 😎
