The government’s proposal to issue driving licenses to tourists upon their arrival has raised questions as to how they reached such a decision without consulting all the stakeholders. Sri Lanka’s tourism industry consists of thousands of tour guides & taxi operators as well who depend on this sector for their livelihoods. By implementing such decision without consulting the taxi operators and guides puts many livelihoods at risk.

Sri Lanka already has a treaty in place where those who hold international driving licenses can drive here as well. But it should be limited only to them.

Within the past few days I have been travelling across the country and meeting a cross section of people to listen to their concerns. In these discussions I have been receiving many complaints from tour guides and taxi operators who want the govt to go in for a broader consultation before implementing decision which will have detrimental impacts on the tourism industry as a whole.
