Petty Trading in Nigeria: Still Alive, But Struggling.

The Trade sector (which includes petty trading) is still expanding, but its growth rate remains below the national average.

Growth has been weak since 2023/2024 due to:

1. High inflation reducing consumer purchasing power
2. Rising cost of goods
3. Nigerians cutting back on spending and shifting to cheaper alternatives

While formal retail has slowed, petty trading (the informal sector) has likely been hit harder because it relies heavily on low-income consumers, the group most affected by the cost-of-living crisis.
