I became an Indiana state police chaplain on October 25, 1991, and began riding with Trooper Scott Beamon, now a lieutenant, once a week. Riding with him gave me a different view of policing as an African American. I didn’t fully realize the risks officers face until I experienced them firsthand. I was often concerned for Trooper Beamon whenever he stopped a car, especially when there were multiple passengers. I was also shown what to do if something happened to him. Once, when Trooper Beamon had a scuffle with someone he had pulled over, he signaled me to radio for help, and I was so scared. I had a front-row seat and witnessed how that situation could have gone really badly and been very tragic.
Today, I believe the dangers officers face are even greater than in the 1990s, with more armed individuals who show little regard for human life. There are many dangerous people in society, and every time police officers encounter them, they put their lives on the line to serve and protect us. Policing shouldn’t be judged by the few who violate their oath or harm others unjustly. I can tell you that the vast majority of women and men who wear the badge do so honorably, risking their lives daily to serve and protect us all. I am grateful to the men and women in this nation who are police officers and risk their lives to serve and protect us all.
