The Tribune editorial is calling for Governor Pritzker to step in to address the Mayor Johnson-CTU Stacy Davis Gates orchestrated school crisis. He can do that by reactivating the Chicago School Finance Authority (SFA) to take financial control over the schools.

It would be accompanied by a NO STRIKE clause and SFA would be empowered to approve ALL contracts as well as the school district’s budget. It would also have the authority and capacity to conduct forensic audits.

With the state facing a budget deficit of $3.2 billion next year, it doesn’t have the money to provide schools statewide the over $4 billion needed to get the over $1 billion Johnson/Davis Gates demand. The state is certainly not going to raise taxes to do it.

CTU outrageous contract demands follow the last contract that raised CTU member salaries between 24-50% and added 9,000 positions since 2019. The district currently spends 30,000 per student and has ONE staff person for every 7.6 students and over 22,000 non-teachers.

If Pritzker fails to act, school reform advocates should seek a Federal Consent Decree that will end an education system that has confined poor, overwhelming minority, children in Chicago to failing schools.

Since 2019, the city has ELIMINATED 1,700 police positions while the schools ADDED 9,000 new positions. Now Mayor threatens to CUT another 2,473 police if he doesn’t get his $300 million property tax hike while sending $300 million in TIF windfall to the schools to hire more CTU members.

Today, CPS has ONE employee for every 7.6 students. More than half their employees (over 22,000) are NON teachers. CPS has over 10,000 more NON-TEACHING STAFF than city police officers. CTU wants more staff, which means more CTU members and of course, more $$$ for politics.
