WIthin a few miles of my house there are Grizzly Bears, wolves, mountain lions, coyote packs, and a few anti-social folk.
I recently moved from a MUCH larger town where my house was on the main highway through the very middle. Just a few months after I moved in a bear killed a deer in my back yard.... in the middle of hundreds of homes.
We've got a pretty low crime rate as it's risky to commit a crime in a place where no one needs government permission to strap on a gun and carry it everywhere except a few limited facilities.
We're one of the 29 States that has Constitutional Carry. That law respects the constitutional restriction on government of "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"
Our Sheriffs tend to have small organizations covering large areas... Response time at one of my former homes was usually about two hours if enough deputies were free to send one. Waiting for a police response in most of the state is wishful thinking in emergancies. (Fortunately local fire departments, mostly volunteer, are much better with medical or fire responses..)
FWIW my county has less than 7 people per square mile... so you need to be moderately self sufficent or you really should live somewhere else.
Absolutly! Got some amazing technical training. Worked with electronics from WWII vintage tube electronics, to LASERS and microprocessor controlled navigational beacons.
After I retired and attended business school I was pleased to find the training the Air Force gave supervisors was based on the same principles that I learned in college.
Worked or lived in nine countries, saw some interesting places, met interesting people.
My orders to Vietnam were canceled as I was on the boarding ladder to a C141 on Norton AFB CA... The Paris Peace Talks decided we weren't needed...
As a Cold War type we were on high alert both times I was in Germany. Never knew whether it was an exercise or WWIII.
Terrorism was a daily thing in Germany. GIs getting killed and their cars used as bombs, and all sorts of minor threats.
Thankfully the US Army Europe put reflective license plates on our cars so they could be easily spotted by Bad Actors anywhere we parked them...
Despite that we somehow we managed to live in the community while the Terrorists targeted the military facilities.
I got out fairly healthy, and my biggest brag is that every airman that worked for me and paid attention got promoted, got degrees, and spent their time working for me in a fair and well organized working environment.
