あの「ふ」はだれがデザインしたの？――読んでいる本に使われている書体の「ふ」が特徴的で美しい、というポストから話題になっている精興社書体。現在はデジタルフォントですが、そのおおもとは活版印刷の時代に生まれた印刷会社・精興社のオリジナル書体です。はたして、この書体の生みの親はだれなのでしょうか？

もとは、昭和のはじめ、君塚樹石という種字彫刻師が約3.7mm角の大きさ、鏡文字で、手で彫刻した文字でした。そこから型取りをして、活字を量産するための型をつくったのです（おおもとの文字が「種字」です）。

私たちの文化を支える活字書体を生み出していた種字彫刻師たちですが、あくまでも裏方で、記録があまり残っていません。残された種字や資料から、主に明治から昭和に仕事をした14人の種字彫刻師をまとめた１冊が『活字の種をつくった人々　わずか２ミリの活字のもと“種字”を手彫りした彫刻師たち』（雪朱里=著、水鈴社）です。美しい種字や原図の写真もたっぷり載せています。

君塚樹石はいかにも職人風の、わがままだけど人情味のある一流の彫刻師でした。この本には、精興社書体がいかにして生まれたか、それを彫った君塚樹石はどんな人物だったのかも載せています。

あの「ふ」に魅了されたという方々に、活字文化を支えてきたこうした職人がいたこと、なによりその魅力的な人物像にぜひふれていただけたらうれしいです。
