If a pupil canโt hold a book or turn the pages, the answer isnโt to remove the book โ itโs to adapt it. Change the access, not the expectation. Literacy belongs to everyone.

As Dr Karen Erickson reminds us, if you are alive, you are on the literacy continuum. There are no other prerequisites. Literacy grows through belief, opportunity & access โ not readiness.
๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐ ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: Literacy doesnโt need more time โ it needs intention.
For pupils with complex needs, small moments matter when adults act deliberately: printed names at registration, modelling AAC in routines & pausing for responses are all ways to embed it.
๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ - It was a pleasure to meet Emma Steel, of Every Cherry Publishing, this week & to spend time talking about something we care deeply about: access to age-appropriate, accessible books for all learners.

Impact isnโt always easy to measure โ especially when itโs about shifting beliefs and practice.
Thatโs why feedback from professionals matters. Those reflections help shape what we offer next and strengthen how we advocate for literacy for all.
As Dr Karen Erickson reminds us, There is no starting point that learners must reach before literacy teaching begins โ and there is no such thing as being โnot readyโ for literacy.
Too often, pupils with complex needs are said to be taught โliteracyโ without consistent access to print. If print is missing, literacy instruction is incomplete.
When we say literacy, where is the print?

When pre-schoolers make early marks, we assign meaning and treat them as the start of writing. Learners with complex needs deserve the same response. When we treat marks as meaningful, writers grow. Writing Workshops: https://t.co/ZuG49wXQKn

This week weโre sharing an article from The Times on the importance of reading with your child. Shared reading builds connection, attention & communication โ and this matters for all children, including those with complex needs.

When learning feels hard, motivation matters. Literacy grows when it connects to what truly engages each pupil โ & when teachers work in partnership with parents to understand what motivates them at home.
Motivation isnโt extra. Itโs the starting point.

Understanding Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) is key to access and literacy for pupils with complex needs. CVI affects how the brain processes visual info โ not eyesight. When we understand CVI, teaching changes and access improves.

As a new term begins, pause to notice whatโs already shifted. Itโs easy to rush on and miss progress โ especially for learners with complex needs.
Small changes matter.
What have you done differently, and what have you noticed?
#๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐ ๐ผ๐๐ถ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: Teaching communication isnโt the same as teaching literacy and non-speaking pupils need both. Communication helps learners express themselves.
Literacy teaches reading & writing.
One must not replace the other.
