Motivation should wane.
If you expect to be motivated all the time, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.
Ride the wave of motivation. Don't fret if it's not there. It'll come back.

Stop moralizing success and failure.
There are many reasons for it. Success and failure are messy. Embrace the messiness.
You don’t need to minimize others’ work to be secure in your own.
If you want to worry about the fancy stuff, the 'sexy' details, great...
But you better make sure you are doing whatever the equivalent of 2 hard workouts, a long run, and 100+ miles per week for years is in your profession.
That is what really matters and makes the difference.
Be like Frank Shorter.
Don't be the guy who obsesses over the details, which prevents him from doing the consistent solid work for years on end.
Don't get lost in magic supplements, special workouts, and fancy gadgets.
Frank Shorter won Olympic Gold and Silver in the marathon. He ran 2:10 back in 1972.
His training? Just about the same thing every week, for months on end. Nothing fancy.
Consistency is king. If you don't have consistency on the basics, whatever else you do doesn't matter.
Tommy Rivers Puzey nearly died after he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer in July 2020.
He had to relearn how to swallow, how to use his hands, how to sit up and to walk. Then, on Sunday, he completed the New York City Marathon.

In case you missed it, here's @tommy_rivs finishing the @nycmarathon. A tremendous honor to not only get to announce his finish, but to get a hug just before he crossed the line. This guy's smile could light up the world.

A year ago my friend @tommy_rivs relearned to walk. On Sunday he'll run the NYC Marathon.
Here's a story I wrote with @trailrunnermag about how meaningful that is and what his encouragement means for all of us.
