To demedicalise distress is not to delegitimise distress. One can honor, respect and care for profound suffering without labeling it as illness, pathology or disorder.
#NHS services should be publicly delivered not provided by US health giants with an NHS logo where profits are to be had
We need to #scrapnhsbill and replace with laws to protect NHS forever & bring social care into the NHS family where it belongs🌈
By categorizing normal dimensions of human distress & struggle as psychiatric illness we have created an epidemic of prescribed harm, turned episodic conditions into chronic disability & created drug dependence in a population of people who otherwise could be living better.
Our culture has such an obsession with “learning to be happy” that when we experience any kind of sadness, anger, or overwhelm, we assume something is really wrong with us.
Life includes suffering. It always will. Let’s not pathologize normal pain.
We’ve created a society which encourages us to look inside ourselves and then accept psychiatric diagnosis which positions us as the cause and solution to our distress; so we never find the real cause of it - oppression, abuse, fear, poverty, distress, capitalism, gaslighting etc
Break downs in society/culture/family are factors in psychological suffering. Without acknowledging & addressing the social & psychological problems of modern society we are prone to misattributing our loneliness, sadness, anxieties & distrust to innate/biological causes.
“Our capacity as human beings for imagination and storytelling makes us exquisitely vulnerable to exploitation by those who understand the properties of ideological power.” David Smail, power interest and psychology
