Before he was shattering Premier League records, Erling Haaland was just a regular kid eating at his local Chinese restaurant in Norway.

The Magic of Modern Day Superstars- a review for #HelloLoveAgain

I felt the colossal effect of our talented, modern day superstars of Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards.

This film was carried by the two of them. I feel given to lesser actors, the film would be flimsy and may not have the same impact.

But they have a certain cinematic magic that stirs to our hearts. Kaya yan box office hit, it is because of them.

To start, Hello, Love, Goodbye is one of my favorite romantic dramas. I loved the tale of the diaspora, I love the modern take of love, I love the strong-willed heroine in Joy Marie Fabregas, and her most relatable story. So let us just say I was anticipating this. and sort of dreading it too.

So now from the bustling streets of Hong Kong, we move to the vibrant, Calgary, Canada.

I did like the non-linear story-telling which had us playing guessing game, somewhat piecing the puzzle of the failed relationship of Ethan and Joy or now —-“Marie” as she calls herself in the current timeline.

Some say Marie’s Canada diaspora story seems so exaggerated here —- I have to completely disagree. actually it is not, the West mindset of the never-ending hustle is real.

Especially for Filipino immigrants that end up in the West. I have seen my parents and their peers go through it. Chasing the paper is real. Money is out there to be made and the Maries of the world is definitely a real story.

I like the angst, I like how realistic the problems were especially when the film steered into issues when the pandemic hit. I like how things connected from its predecessor and how we got to a new chapter of their (un) love story.

But unlike HLG wherein the supporting characters felt real, hilarious, and even gritty —- this felt contrived.

Hindi ako natuwa sa new characters and friends ni Marie. Hindi ako natuwa sa treatment ng Canada story until we get to the actual love story.

What made HLG strong was the quiet restraint of telling their story, the slow-burn kilig, and the effective world-building they gave us. It all felt so human.

In HLA, there was no restraint. It was all pedal to the metal; kulang nalang laugh track. The moments are loud and shrill. Like punchlines to our face. With one instance happening to the next.

The direction is still good but it took a bit of footing before the story took off.

But once it did take off, I was reeled back in.

Special props to Joross Gamboa. He is such an effective comedian and scene stealer.

Now let us get to the excellent part of the film and the real magic of why this film has packed theaters even here in the US.

It is the juggernaut superstars in Kathryn and Alden Richards. Their chemistry is natural and effortless. Their performances raw and poignant. They know how to ANGST. They will shatter your heart to pieces and work the scene into kilig surges minutes after.

Kathryn Bernardo as Marie is beautiful and disarming. Strong-willed and controlled emotions to the brim. So when she actually breaks down we break down with her. Like it was not just heartbreaking but it almost felt like she tattered her soul.

Alden Richards as Ethan is her equal match on-screen. He goes from brash and prideful to restrained and remorseful effectively. His eyes tell so many stories of heartbreak, guilt, pride, rage, and love.

They are magic together. The chemistry is blazing, emotions drowning us, and tension that can cut through a knife. Their chemistry adds depth to the film. They are captivating and thrilling together - and they are what made the film for me.

story-wise- I am still a bigger fan of HLG but this is a bigger and better KathDen.

Overall, it was enjoyable,especially when the film goes to define what home really is in the world of the Filipino diaspora.

it is not where is your home but WHO.
