The future belongs to builders.
People who understand how technology works and use AI as leverage will create incredible products.
Do not replace coding with AI.
Combine both.
Should young people still learn coding in the age of AI?
Or should they just learn prompting?
This is one of the most important career questions right now.
Here is the honest answer most people are not telling you.
Thread.
A lot of people believe AI will replace programmers.
So they tell young people:
"Do not waste time learning coding. Just learn prompting."
This sounds smart.
But it is dangerously incomplete advice.
Instead of asking:
"Should I learn coding or AI?"
Ask a better question:
"How can I learn coding AND use AI to become faster than everyone else?"
That is the real opportunity.
The biggest mistake young people can make today is chasing shortcuts.
Learning prompting without understanding technology limits you.
Learning coding and using AI multiplies your ability.
The developers who will dominate the next decade will have three abilities:
Strong coding fundamentals
Deep problem solving ability
The skill to work with AI tools effectively
This combination is extremely powerful.
The real shift happening right now is this:
Developers are no longer just writing code.
They are becoming system designers who collaborate with AI.
This actually increases the value of skilled engineers.
Think of AI like a very powerful intern.
It can write code quickly.
But it still needs someone who understands the system to guide it.
That person is the engineer.
AI can generate code.
But someone still needs to understand:
Why the code works
Why it breaks
How to optimize it
How to scale it
How to secure it
Without that knowledge, you are only guessing.
Prompting is useful.
But prompting alone does not build real systems.
Real products still require:
Architecture
Databases
APIs
Security
Deployment
Scaling
These things require engineering knowledge.
