People keep acting as though explaining why someone committed an act automatically means they shouldn’t be held responsible for it.

If a man gets drunk and rapes a woman, we don’t simply say, “He was under the influence, so he wasn’t responsible for what he did.”

If someone steals because they’re desperately poor, we can understand the desperation without pretending the theft didn’t happen.

If someone assaults another person because they were angry, we can understand the anger without declaring the assault acceptable.

Circumstances can explain behaviour without erasing accountability.

And that’s where I struggle with the Lindsay Clancy argument. Because while everyone is debating Lindsay’s mental state, three children don’t get to have a second chance at life.

Yes, she was mentally ill. Yes, postpartum psychosis is serious. Yes, I have sympathy for anyone suffering a psychiatric crisis.

But none of that, by itself, proves that she was incapable of knowing what she was doing or incapable of understanding that killing her children was wrong.

Three children were deliberately killed. Not one kid but three.

Mental illness may explain why someone does something. The legal question is whether that illness was so severe that the person should not be held criminally responsible.

Those are two completely different questions.

And I don’t think we should be afraid to say that simply because the person involved is a mother who was suffering.

Compassion for the perpetrator and justice for the victims can coexist.

She waited until her husband left. She was alone with them. She carried out the k!llngs. Then she attempted suicide.
