MacBook Air M5 - First impressions after 48h as a lifelong Windows user.
Pros:
β Battery life: It's just phenomenal. I charge it in the morning, and it lasts me till bedtime. I finished charging it last night at 7 pm and used it for 6-7h since. Rn it's 12 pm the next day, and it's still at 48%.
β Trackpad: Not only is it made of glass and has amazing haptics, but it's also integrated extremely well in the software with slick gestures. This is the closest experience I've had of a mouse from a trackpad. Though the customisation of gestures could've been better, like Windows.
β Performance: The M5 chip is extremely powerful; it doesn't break a sweat while doing any day-to-day task. It's like a hot knife slicing through butter. Not to mention the performance is consistently good regardless if you're on battery or plugged in (I am yet to do proper heavy stuff though)
β macOS: While I have many complaints with the way macOS works, fortunately, most of them can be fixed by installing apps and sometimes by changing the default behaviour in settings. This is something you can't do in iOS as cohesively. The software is far better than what microslop is doing currently with Windows, even though this is the buggy af macOS 26 taHOE.
β Build quality: It's nothing extraordinary, but I gotta appreciate how premium everything feels. And the fanless design is a massive blessing when using it on the bed. These are some things many models at the Windows side fail to achieve at this price or maybe even at a higher price.
Cons:
π¨ Display: While not exactly a con since it's a great quality panel, I didn't find anything extraordinary in this compared to the competition. In fact, it's behind a lot of competitors with its 60Hz and LCD at this price.
β Keyboard: First and foremost, there's no delete key, which I used A LOT on my Windows laptop. Second, some function key shortcuts seem kinda redundant, and instead, it could've had something more useful, like keyboard brightness (which I can change only in the software for some reason). The overall typing experience is ok. It's a slim laptop, so you can't expect a great typing experience; that's just breaking physics, but it's good for what it is.
β Charging: The battery is phenomenal, as I said above, but the same can't be said about the charging. It's a puny 30W brick that comes in the box. It takes 2.5-3h for a 0-100% charge, which is pathetic. I shouldn't have to spend more for a faster charger after what's now βΉ150k ($1590). Not to mention, I can't even choose when buying from resellers, I am forcefully shoved with this 30W brick down my throat.
β Gaming support: While not a fault of Apple, it's still a con I have to face when buying a MacBook. I like to do occasional gaming, but I can't play almost all of the games I like without something like Crossover.
Honestly, there aren't many cons that I can think of, which is really good. There might be a few nitpicks here and there, which I will talk about in my full review, so do follow for that.
@MicrosoftvApple Hey @MicrosoftvApple , considering the keyboard point & also average display which you mentioned, it looks a bit serious to me as then this laptop just doesn't justify it's price point to be honest!
As keyboard, touchpad & display quality should be the best for user experience!
@HxrshitYadav Now I took it to my EGO!
Ab sidha Dubai jaakar Macbook Pro lunga after few months!
Although my office laptop is of higher spec than M5 Air, so nothing excited me much in buying it!
@jain_harshit@unsungserenity That's great man! I really liked that Intuit is valuing it's long term employees.
As mostly people only switch for hikes but no one like to switch every often & trying to adjust in new environment & people.
@jain_harshit@unsungserenity So @jain_harshit , do you think you are getting paid as per the market standards of Staff Software Engineer in any other Product Based Company even after staying so long in Intuit?
@striver_79 I think if you would have also joined them they might have felt more happy!
As WFH guys are the ones who don't get the chance to meet their founder in-person!
@rajvishah30 Looks like you have become half south indian already π.
