A fine line between outsiders arriving to a community and adding to it in a positive way...and this trap:
Wealthy outsiders move in and turn a place into a kind of "theme park" playground version that damages the soul of the place

@r_o_farrell Is there an all-island number?
Heavy mix of plates in our neck of the woods (Donegal) ๐ฌ๐ง๐ฎ๐ช
Maybe same for other border counties also?
Folks say cheaper cars and lower insurance premiums in NI make it worth it for those who have connections to register there.
What will farming look like in 2050?
Let's take a look back and pretend history tells the future.
I'm pretty sure if you where sitting at the USDA in 1990 you could have done a fair job of guessing how many dairy farms would exist in 2020.
"A few investors and executives loudly decamped to Miami, but an analysis of LinkedIn user data shows that about six times as many tech workers went from the San Francisco Bay Area to Austin" > why they left SF? Housing & homelessness.
@sweatystartup Rural internet speed in our relatively remote corner of North West Ireland ๐ฎ๐ชโฌ๏ธ
(the whole country is smaller than many states in the US so can't compare exactly!)๐บ๏ธ
Considering #Starlink satellite internet for your rural business?
Interesting video on the rollout from the US...
It's expensive, coverage is still patchy, service is not always reliable...but could be HUGE for the remote work future...

#OurRuralFuture
What will #OurRuralFuture mean in practical terms? ๐ฎ๐ช๐ค
Ireland looking to adapt to a future where #remotework is commonplace...
Hard to differentiate this initiative from tourism ad campaigns.
Living in the countryside is not the same as a vacation in the countryside...
If like me youโve ever counted the concentric rings on a tree stump, as a way to learn how old the tree was when it was cut down....
Then itโs interesting to see here this way of checking the age of a tree - using a corer - which doesnโt involve cutting it down โฌ๏ธ ๐ฒ ๐ณ
Northern Russia, 2017.
A conservation carpenter was demonstrating how to ascertain the age of a tree by using a corer.
Pleasingly, these forests are well managed, with restrictions on what can be felled.
Is rural living in Ireland possible without a motor vehicle?
This shows the decline in ๐ฎ๐ช train lines โฌ๏ธ
Vehicles ARE a necessity in rural areas.
Are any rural communities operating sharing schemes for cars, vans, tractors etc rather than everyone needing to own separately? ๐ค
Where did it all go wrong Iarnrรณd Enda?๐
Ireland's extensive rail network at its peak in 1920 #Ireland had 3,500 route miles but in the 1950s, 1960s large swathes of routes were unfortunately closed and today the total network is 1,698 route miles.

@rrhoover Ireland! ๐ฎ๐ช
Incredible access to USA, EU, UK markets. Good timezone. Affordable outside of Dublin. English language skills. Many advantages.
A little more welcoming to multinationals than actual startup entrepreneurs but still a good ecosystem and talent pool.
Magical, too...
@pedrovalesantos@Gonzohall It's an opportunity for a win/win for sure.
But there's difference between a place being a "theme park" or a place to call home (and to be respected as such)...
Gentrification not a new story either ๐ค complicated and sometimes impossible to resist!
Good breakdown of what's driving the exodus of entrepreneurs, innovators and creators from California...!
Who's considering a move to Ireland? ๐๐ฎ๐ช
https://t.co/JCKECLr4ce
@Gonzohall@pedrovalesantos Big mutual benefit for communities and remote workers IF โDigital Nomadismโ doesnโt result in Airbnb-style gentrification/homogenisation of places...
...and instead becomes something that helps bring about real rural renaissance (and vibrant urban spaces)!
@r_o_farrell Any idea if there are any EU stats on burning rubbish at home as a means of disposal?
Seems relatively widespread here in North West of Ireland, not sure about other parts of the island.
@r_o_farrell Yes also seems Christmas in Ireland is important for connecting folks with โhomeโ social group e.g. emigrants visiting home from abroad or Dublin...family & community ties relying on big annual winter trip possibly more than other countries in Europe. Time for more #localism IMO!
