The Gamble Behind the Camera

For most people, gambling is a weekend thrill or a whispered vice, confined to rehab clinics, high-roller rooms, and backroom deals. For Jonny Caplan, it’s the driving force behind his boldest creative endeavor yet. The award-winning filmmaker, previously known for high-profile tech documentaries, has now gone all in on Place Your Bets, a six-part docudrama exploring the cultural and economic evolution of gambling, from ancient civilizations to modern mega-casinos.

Set to stream later this year, the series has already generated industry buzz for its fearless approach to a topic many still treat with kid gloves. If the premise sounds like a gamble, that’s exactly the point.

“Risk is incredibly inherent to human culture and nature,” Caplan told Rocco Strydom on the Stonks Go Moon Podcast. “Without it, we’d never have discovered anything.”

From Knuckle Bones to Code: The Digital Evolution of Gambling

Place Your Bets is no sentimental ode to Vegas glitz. Instead, it zooms out to examine the broader sweep of gambling’s place in human history and then sharply focuses on its modern transformation. From Roman dice games to the burgeoning gaming culture in India, the series charts a global narrative. But its emotional and economic core lies in the 21st-century shift: the move from smoky tables to digital screens.

Caplan’s own past as a pioneer in the online gambling space lends the project a layer of authenticity. As founder of moneygaming, one of the first skill-based gaming platforms, he witnessed firsthand how technology began to blur the line between fun and fixation, between accessible play and financial ruin.

“The analog to digital revolution changed everything,” he said. “We show that tipping point - when poker was outlawed in the U.S., and online gambling exploded across borders.”

The Faces of a $500 Billion Industry

With interviews filmed across five countries and a unique format that blends documentary realism with scripted dramatizations, Place Your Bets captures the full spectrum of the gambling world. Real-life figures like poker legend Daniel Negreanu appear alongside fictionalized accounts of addiction, debt, and redemption.

Caplan knows what he is talking about, not just as director but as a participant. A seasoned poker player with World Series experience, he knows both sides of the chip stack. “I’ve knocked out world champs in Vegas,” he laughs. “And I’ve felt the crash that comes after.”

Telling the Truth, Even When Networks Don’t Want It

Caplan’s decision to self-finance the entire series wasn’t just a creative choice but a statement. Without network interference, he and his team retained full editorial control. That freedom allowed them to explore not just the glamor but the psychological costs of gambling in the digital era. “We’re not here to sell glitter. We’re here to show what it really looks like.”, Caplan said.

The payoff is a series praised by early viewers for its honest portrayal of a world where fortunes are won and families are lost with a single click.

Betting on the Right Streamer

With filming complete, Place Your Bets is currently being shopped to global distributors. Caplan is seeking a partner with both reach and integrity and one willing to distribute a show that doesn’t flinch from hard truths.

Platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime are reportedly in discussions, with Caplan expressing optimism about the appetite for stories with real-world weight. “People want to be uplifted again,” he said. “They want stories that show the whole journey, not just the downfall.”

We’re always asked how we managed to complete four new multi award-winning original productions during the Covid pandemic, when most studios around the world were closed..

Whilst I was stuck in #London we sent #Temi, my bionic counterpart, to meet the production team on site and using #AI #Robotics #LiDar and other new and exciting #tech, I was able to produce and direct with Temi as my alterego, and feel like I was on location.

This is just the start ot all sorts of tools and technologies powered by #AI

At one point, after physically breaking my back on set, Temi helped us to complete the production on @NASA whilst I was totally incapacitated and only able to hold an iPad. 🤖

Yes #innovation and new #tech can be daunting, but look how it helped us to achieve, when the odds were stacked against us! 💪
