Happy International Women's Day from the Africa Tech Workers Movement (ATWM)! 🌍💜
Today we celebrate the women powering the digital economy—from keeping platforms safe as content moderators, to training tomorrow’s AI, to moving our cities as e-hailing riders and drivers.✊🏿
The crisis of mental health in the tech workforce is ignored, leaving vulnerable workers struggling with work-induced trauma. This failure is often due to lawmakers who legislate from the top down without first-hand experience. Workers demand laws and benefits that address this.
"Customer information is not up to date." When delivery addresses and phone numbers are wrong, drivers waste precious time, risk cancellations and are unjustly blamed. Tech platforms must ensure accurate data for fair and efficient work.

"Same work, requirements, demands... same employer." The pay? 10, 20 or even 30 times less just because the worker is African. Tech companies justify this by comparing pay to local minimum wage instead of the global value of the work. This is exploitation disguised as opportunity
"If we are not united... we will continue being exploited." This is the core message from tech workers: individual complaints are ignored, but a united front demands attention. The power to end exploitation lies in organization and collective bargaining. Join the movement. ✊
E-hailing platforms must end the practice of penalizing drivers without a fair investigation into complaints. Justice starts with due process.

Fighting for the basics is not a privilege. It is a right. Every worker deserves clear terms, legal protection and fair benefits. When these protections are missing, people are left vulnerable and undervalued.

Data labelers are often forced to explain the trauma of their work to mental health coaches who lack direct experience. The result? Workers end up counselling the counsellor. Support must be informed by the harsh realities of the content pipeline.
#AfricaTechWorkersMovement
The harsh reality for many e-hailing drivers is that there is no time that we are given as to explain ourselves. This culture of instant deactivation and biased reporting without investigation leaves drivers vulnerable. Fair work starts with being heard.

The law needs to catch up to the gig economy. If a company controls how a driver or worker gets a contract and how they operate, that company must be defined as an employer with the responsibilities that follow.
#AfricaTechWorkersMovement#TechWorkers#PlatformWorkers#FairWork
Data labelers are raising serious concerns about platforms forcing them to work with their cameras on, allowing unconsented surveillance. This raises questions about privacy, data collection, and safety in the gig economy.

When the app map doesn't match the road, drivers have to take a longer route. The client sees the driver "moving away" and cancels the trip, leading to potential account deactivation for the driver.
Fair policy means recognising the real-world challenges.
Our labour laws were written before the gig economy existed. David calls for the government to bring the "Labour Relations Act into technology" to create a legal framework that actually protects e-hailers and other tech workers.
