Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

A few days ago marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. A reminder that while progress has been made, the fight is far from over.

Globally, FGM is declining. Fewer girls today are being cut compared to previous generations. That is powerful proof that awareness, education, advocacy, and community action work. But progress is not moving fast enough. At the current rate, the world risks missing the 2030 target to eliminate FGM.
Millions of girls remain at risk simply because awareness has not reached everywhere it needs to.

FGM is not culture! It is not protection! It is not health! It is a harmful practice with lifelong consequences.

FGM can lead to:
• Severe infections and chronic pain
• Sexual and reproductive complications
• Trauma and psychological distress
• Dangerous childbirth complications
• Increased risk of obstetric fistula and maternal harm
• Newborn complications and preventable deaths
These are not rare side effects. They are documented realities affecting women and girls every day.

Ending FGM requires more than laws. It requires conversations in homes, communities, healthcare spaces, schools, and faith settings. It requires men, women, youth, leaders, and professionals to speak openly and refuse silence. Awareness is not optional. It is lifesaving.

Many countries are moving from the traditional Pap smear to HPV testing, which checks directly for the virus that causes cervical cancer. It is more sensitive,

slowly and often shows no symptoms at the early stages. Screening detects HPV or abnormal cells before cancer develops. This is how lives are saved.

💉 Prevention works:
✔️ HPV vaccination protects against the most dangerous HPV types

* Vaginal, anal, or oral sex
* Genital-to-genital contact without penetration
