Latest report from Zimbabwe’s national broadcaster, ZBC, from the crash scene where the helicopter carrying Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and four other people came down.
ZBC reports that the bodies are still at the scene this morning. The helicopter crashed at Kudenga Farm in Marondera Rural District, approximately 80 kilometres east of Harare. The crash site reportedly covers a radius of about 200 metres, with body parts scattered across the area, according to journalists who visited the scene.
Chivayo rose to prominence as a “tenderpreneur” and became closely associated with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom he supported through his involvement in ZANU-PF activities.
He later expanded his business interests across Africa and cultivated relationships with several African presidents, including Kenya’s President William Ruto, who posted a condolence message on X this morning describing Chivayo as a dear friend.
It is not yet clear what caused the helicopter to crash. Investigations are expected to establish what happened, although political elites in Zimbabwe have already begun promoting various theories and conspiracy claims.
The crash was extremely horrific. One witness, speaking about the scene and the painful manner of Chivayo’s death, said he would not wish such a tragedy on anyone.
