The CIA’s Insane Mid-Air Heist from a Soviet Ice Station.
In 1962, the CIA discovered an abandoned Soviet research station drifting on a fracturing ice floe in the Arctic Ocean. It contained advanced acoustic equipment for tracking American submarines.
Retrieving it seemed impossible, the ice was too unstable for aircraft, and walking out was suicide.
Two operatives, Major James Smith and Lieutenant Leonard LeSchack, volunteered for Operation Coldfeet. They parachuted directly onto the disintegrating ice shelf and spent three days rummaging through the frozen base, gathering classified documents and top-secret submarine-detection technology while the ice cracked beneath their feet.
Getting out was the real challenge. No runway. No helicopter landing possible.
Their extraction relied on one of the most ridiculous contraptions in espionage history: the Fulton Skyhook. The agents attached themselves to harnesses lifted by giant weather balloons. A modified B-17 bomber then flew directly at the cables at over 130 miles per hour, snagging the lines mid-air and violently yanking the two men off the ice and into the plane’s belly.
The mission succeeded without a single shot fired. The stolen Soviet technology gave the U.S. a major intelligence advantage during the Cold War.
@jsm291135@litteralyme0 That's Ana de Armas. The video is a fan edit of clips from her roles (like Joi in Blade Runner 2049, plus scenes from War Dogs and others) set to "Sex, Drugs, Etc." by Beach Weather.
